Veterinary medicine is the study of animals and the ability to properly treat and diagnose an animal according to their symptoms. Animals are tough creatures to understand due to the inability to speak and show emotion. Veterinarians must be well educated through a rigorous schooling that can last up to 12 years. Although there is a position that does not require as much schooling which is the Technician, but they cannot perform surgery’s or diagnose illnesses. Veterinarians are compared to human doctors when they are in reality completely opposite. Veterinarians have to study the systems and structures of every animal that can see a vet. According to RCVS Knowledge “it was until the founding of the veterinary school in Lyon, France by Claude Bourgelat in 1761 that the veterinary profession can be said to have started.” Veterinary medicine was started the same way that human medicine was discovered; people began teaching themselves because they felt that the care of their animals and the human population was important. Finding solutions to the problems animals were struggling with began with actually experiencing them. Many animals would die before a veterinarian was trained well enough to prevent a situation from happening. Once the school in Lyon’s was founded, it began education in veterinary medicine and allowed people to become experts in this profession. According to RCVS Knowledge “Initially the veterinary profession was centered on the horse, and this remained the focus for many years influenced by the needs of the army.” Veterinary medicine is needed in many fields, the Army is in need of a veterinarian for the horses that are ridden during wars and the dogs that searched for invaders and bombs.
