The Matrix opened with a shot of a computer screen. As the shot of the computer screen continued, two voices communicated over the phone as they discussed their plan on whether or not they have found the One. The beginning scene started as a group of police officers rushed down a dark hallway of an abandoned hotel room and barged down the door. After they kicked down the door, they entered a dark and empty room to find a “mysterious woman suited in an all black leather ensemble seated at a desk in front of a computer” (Martin). The police illuminated the room with their flashlights and commanded the woman to immediately stop what she is doing and raise her hands in the air. Outside of the hotel, a car full of reinforcement agents arrived. The lead police officer informed the agents that he his team brought the woman down, but the agent replied that the officer’s men have been killed. Meanwhile, inside the hotel the women faced and quickly dispatched the officers. She rushed out of the hotel room and escaped towards the roof of the hotel only to be followed by the group of agents and the officers. The foot chase continued as they jumped over rooftops and leaped over busy streets. The chase finally ended as the woman dove off the top of the building, jumped through a window and tumbled down a flight of stairs. Thomas Anderson lived a double life, “by day he was a computer programmer for a large, generic software company and by night he was a known hacker under the alias ‘Neo’” (Martin). Thomas Anderson suspected that there is something wrong with the world. He became part of an “underground organization that sought to wrest back control back from the machines” (Doidge). Trinity approached Neo at a club and explained to him that she knew all about his suspicions of an unknown world called the Matrix. Trinity led Neo to a man named Morpheus who can explain the meaning of the Matrix. However, the group of agents, led by Agent Smith attempted to prevent Neo from meeting Morpheus. Finally, Neo and Morpheus arranged a meeting where Neo must make the decision of either choosing a blue or red pill. If Neo chose the blue pill, he would wake up in his home and remember nothing, but if Neo decided on the red pill, Morpheus would allow him to see the truth about reality. Neo selected the red pill and his reality is disappeared right in front of him. Neo discovered that he and the rest of society are kept in “womb-like cells, where they supplied energy to a vast computerized artificial intelligence, while their minds are occupied with a completely fake ‘existence’” (Miller).
