Letter To My Freshman Pre-Medicine Student

Living as in breathing? Walking while simultaneously talking and saying words that make sense? Possessing the ability to function? Like a normal human? I hope so. Predicting where I will be at the end of the semester and including all of the former statements feels like wishful thinking. Although positive thinking is a preemptive measure to combat the worries that naturally accompany a freshman pre medicine student. Therefor if I am to be optimistic, my first hope for where I will be at the end of the semester is in the position to say my major with more confidence. Currently I plan on majoring in biology although right now I am not enrolled in a biology class, which partially scares me. I am currently only taking chemistry because I didn’t …show more content…
I always strive to make my parents proud of me, especially my dad who I happen to share a name with. My parents always commit themselves to giving me everything I need to be successful in life and graduating from Case Western would be a small step towards “paying them back.” My mom works in education and my dad’s main pursuit in life is to never stop learning and growing as in individual. Essentially, I could kill two birds with one stone by receiving my diploma. In addition I am looking forward to passing the torch onto my brother, Adam, who will be starting college when I finish. I am excited to see where he decides to continue his education. Baseball is a big part of Adam’s life so I am sure our family will be simultaneously celebrating my accomplishments as well as his in terms of him signing to a school. After leaving Case I plan on going to medical school so on graduation date I will most likely know where I will spending the next four years of my life working towards achieving my goal of becoming a pediatrician. Unfortunately I don’t know what else will change in not just my life but in the life of others close with me such as my family, so these hopes and desires are contingent on the fact that the basic parts of my life remain

On october 5, 2015 I stared across the living room at my parents wondering how I was going to find the words to explain to them one of the most difficult decisions of my life. I had loved softball since I was a little girl and despite many years of hard work and hundreds of hours, I couldn’t help but wonder if this was the right choice for me. Growing up watching my idol, Lauren Chamberlain pursue her dreams inspired me, I spent much of my childhood emulating my hero and dreaming one day I could be just like her. My dreams were briefly interrupted when I started thinking about the future as I got older and realized that my heart really wasn't in the game of softball as much as it once was. After visits to smaller universities and long talks with head coaches, I had come to realize that playing softball in college and the small school atmosphere wasn't really what I wanted anymore.…

To be able to practise medicine would offer me the unique opportunity to combine personal commitment with emotional rewards. It would give me the chance to make real changes in the lives of patients, achieve intellectual satisfaction by committing to an ever-changing and endlessly challenging profession, with a lifelong guarantee for learning. For a deeper insight and appreciation of healthcare and see first-hand the demands faced in medicine, I organised placements at different hospitals. Whilst on the wards, something that stood out to me was how the medics and healthcare professionals worked together as an integrated multi-disciplinary team, giving the patient the highest level of care.
