On the first day of Daybreak, the fellow nursing students and I had discussed with the nurses and the program director about the living quality of the clients. The nurses had encouraged us to teach anything about health since most of the clients never had an opportunity in the past to learn about health. The program director suggested the focus should be on teaching the clients about proper nutrition and diabetic care. Teaching about diabetic care seemed problematic and difficult for the group to work with since it would not target everyone in the room. Instead, the basis of that idea was the inspiration for a new activity where the clients can physically …show more content…
For the recreational exercises, I had suggested balloon volleyball since I saw that as a common exercise done in many nursing homes. The other exercise was to throw plastic Easter eggs into a cups from varying distances. The objective of these was to increase hand and eye coordination, socialization, and provide a light to moderate workout. The nutritional education focused on visual examples of meal portions and what types and amount of foods they should be eating at their age. To execute this part, Taylor had used the hand method to measure foods and brought in papers they could hang on the wall or bulletin about foods. Tom and Chrissy would help conduct the activities while I explained the importance of exercise and what the activities were. We expressed a few concerns with each other about the language barrier and any allergies. The dominant population at Daybreak seemed to be Puerto Rican or Dominican; which had caused language issues since most spoke Spanish and only a small amount of English. This was resolved through the help of a translator. There were two activities incase that way is someone was allergic to latex they could go to the other activity and not feel left out. Our group was well prepped and excited to present the activity since it was fun and engaging for truly any …show more content…
The participants asked a large variety of questions during the nutrition and exercise education as well as engage that they understood by showing us how to use the hand method for food proportions and tell us their personal habits. We provided them more examples of exercises they could do at home since they had asked how to be active at their age. The most enjoyable part came during balloon volleyball and Easter egg toss because the residents would shout in joy and smile the whole time. Their competitive sides would come out and they would see who could throw the most eggs into a cup or even hit the balloon the farthest. The activity could have been conducted in a more organized fashion since the beginning was unprepared. A net was set up for balloon volleyball but in the middle of showing exercises, which was spontaneous, it was taken down but then quickly set back up since the demonstration was very brief. We all worked very well with each other since each one of us had a task to focus on. Taylor was enthusiastic about her teaching since she had prepared with papers and images. Tom and Chrissy had the energy and spirit to conduct each exercise with enough enthusiasm that brought in clients and kept clients engaged. Our activity went very well and even the group had learned something new about elder adults, they can still be very playful and young at
