Do you know how many animals are in the shelter and put to death each year? “Approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those, approximately 3.9 million are dogs and 3.4 million are cats. Each year, approximately 2.7 million animals are euthanized (ASPCA).” Adopting any breed of animal is a not only a big decision, but a substantial responsibility. Most people will do some form of research before making the decision to adopt. There are roughly nine things to consider before adopting a pet. Why do you want a pet, do you have time for one, can you afford one or can you have a pet where you live, are you prepared to deal with the challenges that will come with a pet, is it a good time to adopt, will you be responsible, are you willing to keep the animal for the long haul, and who will be taking care of your pet while on vacation? Upon doing more research, studies show that having a dog will increase your mood. Dogs help with anxiety disorders and are more likely to keep you calm in stressful situations. Not only that, but having a dog is said to improve your blood pressure as well as promote a healthy lifestyle. When it comes to children, having a dog is said to increase the child’s self-esteem, kids tend to miss less school, and children growing up with dogs, rather than cats or no pets, are said to have less chance of allergies and a lower chance of having eczema.
