STEM CELLS Recently you were in a bad accident that resulted in a spinal cord injury. As I understand it you have been told you would be a good candidate for a clinical trial that uses stem cell therapy. The only problem is you don 't whole understand what a stem cell is and how it could help your current condition. Spinal cord injuries (SCI) can happen to anyone, these injuries are affecting people 's personal and financial lives worldwide, the enormous personal and financial cost. These injuries are preventable, but many happen unexpectedly. (Grégoire, C., Goldenstein, B. L., Floriddia, E. M., Barnabé‐Heider, F., & Fernandes, K. L. 2015). Examples of injuries that lead to SCI 's are sporting injuries, motor vehicle accidents, damage to some vertebrae, crushing of the spinal cord and falling. Damage to the spinal cord can result in central nervous system (CNS) dysfunction, which could lead to …show more content…
These injuries can cause cell death within the spinal cord. The normal post care for SCI focuses on physical therapy, rehabilitation and teaching the person to deal with their injury. Stem cell therapy is being used as a rapid and evolving treatment for spinal cord injuries. (American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. 2016). Stem cell therapy is thought to be effective in treating these injuries. Due to stem cells being self-renewing and they have the capability to become any cell in the body. The notion is that stem cells could replace the injured cells and revitalize growth from the existing cells. According to Gregory D. Schroeder, "Stem cell treatment is a realistic hope for spinal cord injury patients."(American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. 2016). While it should be noted that multiple scholarly journals support the use of stem cell treatment to improve an array of serious diseases, major injuries, and conditions that affect humans and animals.
