Mush For The Cure: The Susan G. Komen Foundation

When one thinks of a charity, what comes to mind? Most likely, an organization or a group of people that receive donations to help improve the quality of lives of others, whether it be by letting a terminal child live out their last wish, or furthering research on battling a fatal disease. Most people are simply content with living with their assumption, continuing to live on with their life after donating however much they feel necessary. They are the ones that are preyed upon by the more dishonest and misguiding charities that exist in the world. Constant phone calls, e-mails, and letters in the mail are trademark indicators of these charities. But, when nobody checks up on the charity contacting them, one can simply be content in thinking …show more content…
The Susan G. Komen Foundation, famous for raising money for breast cancer research, has a slightly darker side that your average person probably does not know about. Each year, around one million dollars in legal fees are spent because the Komen foundation vehemently seeks out any other charity or event that uses the phrase “for the cure” with a total of over 100 lawsuits filed as of 2011. Sue Prom, a woman who ran a dog sledding fundraiser for breast cancer entitled “Mush for the Cure,” was told to change the name of her event or face legal ramifications. Another woman who held a kite-flying event named “Kites for a Cure” with the proceeds going towards lung cancer research, was told that the Komen foundation owned the rights to the word “cure” in a name and was again told to change the name or face litigation. Many of these charities that are contacted are nowhere near the size of the Komen foundation and are in many cases “Mom and Pop” charities (Bassett). Obviously, donors believe that their money is going towards helping fight the battle against breast cancer, and not the battle against other harmless charities. Charities need to be as transparent as possible with their money usage. Less people would donate to a charity if they knew that a portion of their money was being used to shut down other charities. In addition, the behavior of …show more content…
People are not at fault for assuming that organizations set up to take donated money and make the world a better place would do exactly that. However, there are people in this world that exist that only care about the number of zeros that appear on their salary, and that needs to be taken into consideration. Unfortunately, the ideals of making money off of the emotions of people, whether it be over the sadness resulting from a lost loved one or the happiness that comes about from surviving a deadly disease, is deeply ingrained in many organizations, whether they be a charity or not. The premier way to help combat these selfish behaviors is to simply take the time to do research on whoever or whatever is receiving the donation to make sure that the correct people can receive the money to help make the world a better

In November, a New York police officer named Larry DePrimo bought a homeless man a pair of boots for the winter. The homeless man was later found to be a panhandler who would rather live begging on the streets than let anyone help him. In the article "Holiday Compassion Can Hurt". Micheal Medved tells readers that it would be better to donate their money to an organization, rather than giving it to just anyone on the streets . I would agree with the author in saying not to trust random people with the money we give to them.…

Susan G. Komen, like many women, fought breast cancer. She fought with everything she had, but she didn’t spend much time worrying about herself and her situation. Instead, she wanted to help the other women going through the same battle. Inspired by Susan’s compassion and want to help others, her sister, Nancy G. Brinker, started an organization in her honor. Susan’s dedication made me wonder what the organization was about.…

The first essay I read is written by Charles Kenny “Haiti Doesn’t Need Your Old T-Shirt”, in Kenny’s essay, he argues that those who are in need would rather receive money instead of clothes, food and other necessities. As I was reading this essay, I question the validity of his arguments, does giving money solve these problems? I do think that when we give money to developing countries it is advantageous, however Kenny’s theme throughout his essay “bottom line: giving donations of cash are nearly always more effective” (254). I feel that his thought and claims are highly subjective. Kenny talks of organizations such as the NFL, World Vision, and British NGO and how these organizations donate to “SWEDOW” (Stuff we don’t want).…

In fact, to some women it may be considered scary due to the statistics given. I would not consider this message plausible. The message would need to provide more persuasive details in order to convince all members that the money being raised will be put to good use. The details of the message are scattered and hard to read. I do consider this message respectful because the message gives credit to Betty Williams who is a survivor and started the cancer center.…

Non-profit organizations are major contributors to social and economic well-being throughout the world. The creation of wealth is not the main objective for non-profit organization; rather they need to serve a social purpose, while maintaining financial sustainability (Moss, Short, Payne, & Lumpkin, 2010). The non-profit sector is not immune from the damage caused by destructive leaders. The destructive leaders are those whose actions have catastrophic effects on everything from the morale of the employees to the safety of the workplace. There are drastic changes taking place in employment relationships that have an impact on the way resources are distributed in society (Bidwell, Briscoe, Fernandez-Mateo & Sterling, 2013).…

Often times, articles and advertisements that encourage people to donate always appear to be faulting people for have enough. Like Peter Singer stated in his article “The Singer Solution to World Poverty”: “In the world as it is now, I can see no escape from the conclusion that each one of us with wealth surplus to his or her essential needs should be giving most of it to help people suffering from poverty so dire as to be life-threatening. That 's right: I 'm saying that you shouldn 't buy that new car, take that cruise, redecorate the house or get that pricey new suit. After all, a $1,000 suit could save five children 's lives” (329).…

While zoning out to our favorite late night television program, we notice a familiar commercial; with the sad, neglected, and abused animals. As much as we try to show no sympathy our heartstrings pull in every direction. However, this advertisement does not want us to feel sympathy, they want us to donate. In fact, they lead us to believe our small donation will make a lasting difference in this animal’s life. A regular group spends at least ninety percent of their expenses on overhead have been widely condemned and were the subject of congressional hearings. Over the past few years there have been a handful of prominent cases of nonprofit groups that preyed on the public’s patriotism and kindness, promising assistance to veterans while lining their own pockets. In today’s materialistic world, we are told that possessions and wealth will bring us meaning when in actuality they only bring temporary satisfaction and leave us craving more. We are so caught up in satisfying our own needs and wants that we rarely take time to look around us at the needs of others. Even when we do see others suffering, many of us are too busy to help or makeup excuses as to why we can’t aid them in their time of need. We look up to celebrities like Paris Hilton and 50 Cent who lead lavish, wasteful, and selfish lifestyles and often aspire to be like them. Many of these stars give little money to charity, and if they do it’s not publicized.…
