IT WAS A NOVEMBER EVENING IN INDIA. The humid air surrounds my brown skin as I finish a long day’s work of sorting through case files. Like always, our run-down office didn’t have any cases to investigate. After work, I walk faster deciding the first thing I’ll do once I get home is to make myself a warm, fine cup of chai. As beads of sweat drip down my face from the heat, I catch something unusual. Two kids huddle, moments away from my traditional house which passed down from generations. The youngest shakes as the older girl hug him close. I see her eyes enlarge a bit, and the boy runs behind her as I near them. She suddenly falls faintly to the dirt, and I dash towards the kids.

Splashing water on her face, I see her eyes slowly open, and I ask, “Are you okay?”

In an uneasy tone, the girl replies with tears in her eyes, “No… my papa… died.”

I notice the clothing they wore. Especially the girl’s traditional wear, which was shabby and the colour was fading. The boy only had on a white drape wrapped around his bottom. They weren’t properly cared for, since the boy was scrawny, and the girl appears weak. I invite the kids in to stay for the night since it was already late, and they would need a place to rest and rejuvenate.

Hesitating for a moment, she looks down at the boy, looking up at her with hunger in his eyes. She takes a deep breath. Then, she allows me to help her into the house with me supporting her weight on my right shoulder. The boy is still shaking as we…
