A relationship with numbers and codes is my fate. I learned math for an Olympic Mathematics Competition that I’ve been involved in since I was 9 years old. I became familiar with algorithms like congruence, Horner algorithm and graph theory before I could use a computer. Now as a senior in the school of mathematics at XX University, one of the top three mathematical schools in China. I chose math as my major to build a good mathematical foundation to thoroughly learn about computer science. With strong interests and full preparation, I’m applying to XX School for admission into the XX program in Computer Science.

I like to use computers to create interesting work. Like building sand castles on the beach, I decided on the features of my creations and the details. If a problem occurs, I do my best to solve it. I write games using python during my free time. It’s really exciting to see how I can now create games from my childhood in only a dozen lines. In the course, Signals and Systems, I wrote software to compute FFT to be more convenient and faster along with my team members. I also took many courses online like Coursera and designed my own webpage. On the webpage I used lighter and deeper colors to strengthen the comments and found that the effect is better than bold font.

Coming into UNC as a first-year student, I was lucky enough to have quite a few transfer credits from high school; many of which were in my intended field of study: mathematics. Looking to continue with a major in mathematics, I signed up for the next course in the intended major progression, MATH 381: Discrete Mathematics. This course serves as an introduction to mathematical logic, almost like a stepping stone towards higher mathematics. On my first day of my first year at Carolina, I walked into the classroom in Phillips to realize that I was the only first year in the course. The rest of them were sophomores or juniors, who were all quite familiar with the inner machinations of Carolina’s mathematics department.…

Another reason I chose computer science is because computers are shaping the direction our world takes and I want to play a part in that. The idea of writing a program that helps a physicist decode the secrets of the universe or a doctor discover a cure for a serious disease holds great appeal for me. Computer science is a continually growing field and with computers becoming involved in almost every aspect of our lives it should remain so for the foreseeable future. Thanks to computer chips imbedded in everything from basketballs and shoes to computer-controlled thermostats more and more computerized data is being produced daily and to manage the acquisition, storage and use of this data will require computer scientists [1]. While sending jobs overseas will slow some aspects of computer science-related job growth overall computer science jobs are expected to continue growth through 2020 [3], [4], [5].…
