A Reflective Essay On Excelsior

Throughout my years at high school I never had the chance to meet someone who was a recovered alcoholic or had the chance to hear about someone that was impacted by alcohol. My parents often told me about how their parents use to drink and they were never around. This played a key role when picking my books because I wanted to hear firsthand about how alcohol could ruin and destroy a life. Furthermore, when looking at the human liberty selection I didn’t want to pick a book that dealt with mental illness because I’m already familiar with that topic and wanted to explore something outside of my comfort zone. I know that it could ruin the liver and that’s about it. When listen to the book I was surprised that I knew so little. I was intrigued with the information and facts that were presented to me. Dawn, author of Excelsior, explained that being an alcohol runs in her family. Before listening to the book I never knew that being an alcoholic could be a cause of a genetic gene. I also didn’t know that AA meetings/classes could be taken online. I was fascinated with all the information that was being presented to me. On the other hand, I have some knowledge about being raised in a religious household and having to deal with being gay. Josh, author of You Are Better Than Your Adversity, talked about how being born in a catholic household pressured him into not wanting tell his parents about him being different. He talked about how coming out to his parents and peers was a hard moment in his life but he was glad he took that leap of faith.
