Reflective Essay: Improving Writing Skills Through Practice

Improved Essays
During this past semester in English 112, I have worked toward improving my writing skills through practice. Throughout this course I wrote four essays: a summary and response, an argumentative, a literary analysis, and a multigenre. Each of these papers were a different type and had its own specific goal to work on. These goals varied greatly and were achieved to a different degree of success. Each paper is presented in the order in which they were written, with the drafts on the left and the final copies on the right. Out of the four, I would consider my multigenre paper to be the strongest, and the summary and response to be my weakest. Reasoning for this will be expanded on later in the preface. In other words, I described how the transition from poetry to prose affected the play. After performing my initial research, I scrapped the first draft and started fresh. I found a book which was written by another author about plotlines and applied it to Hamlet. After writing this draft, I believe the effort spent on achieving my goal and writing a well formulated essay was well-balanced. This resulted in a well-rounded paper which accomplished and surpassed both my personal and classroom goals. The last paper I wrote this semester was a multigenre paper. This was my first time experiencing this genre and so I was a bit hesitant to take risks at first. I decided a good goal was simply to get familiarized with the techniques required so I could continue to use this style in later classes. After my first hour or two, I was already beginning to see that this was a style that could not be done without taking risks, so I decided to change my initial philosophe and goal. I decided to replace my previous goal with “take risks while writing the paper, if they do not work out, swap it with a different genre.” I quickly realized that, given the extreme flexibility of these projects, this was by far the most effective way to go about

During this semester of English W131, I have experienced both accomplishments and setbacks while learning how to improve my writing skills. Throughout the course, I have learned that writing is not only about how much information is in the paper, but also about how well the writer’s thoughts are expressed throughout the text. Practicing many different styles of writing as I did in the class has helped me tremendously with my delivery in my writing. I believe that this course was one to prepare us for future writing courses with professors we will encounter who will give us feedback that may puzzle us because it will require more work and more thinking. Although I have had difficulty in the class, I do believe that I have learned from my mistakes and that I am finishing the course with stronger writing skills that will help me though the rest of my college career and life.…

Adequate writing was always a struggle for me because I struggled with coming up with topics to write about. Even when teachers gave us prompts to write about I struggled writing about them mostly because I thought writing was boring. Another reason I was discouraged by writing was I would spend hours at a time trying to come up with ideas for a prompt and would barely come up with any ideas to write about. Being a civil engineering major I see why writing is so important in my career field. My experience with writing has had its good moments and its bad moments.…

To me, writing is just ok, nothing special. It definitely isn’t something I get excited about. My first formal writing class was in 6th grade, where we followed The Institute for Excellence in Writing’s curriculum. My fellow classmates and I mainly wrote short, 1-3 paragraph reports on various historical topics. I did well in these classes, I just never really enjoyed the process of writing.…

As time ticks by, my hands rush to scribble down letters to form the first essay of the first semester, then the second, and finally the last. Throughout the first semester, students in Honors English experienced writing essays in a short amount of time while trying to maintain the essay’s quality. I believe that although I did well in some parts of my Summer Reading Essay, The Odyssey Essay, and Character showing Empathy Essay, there were pieces of the essays that could be improved and in the future, I aim to achieve the goals I have set up to enhance my work.…

Over the course of this semester in my English 1320 class I have seen a drastic change throughout my writing style. Although I still have difficulties with a few writing tasks, I believe that I have improved significantly throughout this course. I have found that with my professor’s guidance along with my own personal editing that my grades have increased. Although it is difficult to not get caught up in simply striving for a letter grade or attaining a 4.0 grade point average, I would like to believe that my main goal was different. Of course I would love to achieve those goals as well, but overall my primary goal throughout this class was to become more relaxed and comfortable in my writings, to use new strategies and proper kinds of conventions, and to truly find a way to express my passion on these papers.…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed.
