A Twisted Perception As I came home from church, I climbed in bed to rest my sore body from a strenuous two weeks of band camp. I reminisced on the countless moments of elation that it brought me. It was the first activity I participated in to commence my senior year of high school. I envisaged that this would finally be my year! Unexpectedly, my mother’s voice interrupted my thoughts. “Shannon!” exclaimed my mother. The intensity of her voice made me unsettled, so I bounced out of bed and walked towards the other end of our house to her room. Quietly, I walked over to the side of the bed where she was relaxing. She glanced up at me and sneezed. I presumed her allergies had once again renewed, and I confirmed my assumption as she proceeded to tell me why she called me to her room. “I need you to run to the store for me,” she said softly. “These allergies are trying to turn into something more and I don’t need that. The list is on the nightstand.” I grabbed …show more content…
Promptly, I questioned why the car was still passing me, only to realize I could see the truck but they could not. My body stiffened with clenched fists grasping the steering wheel, braving myself for the imminent catastrophe I was set out for. Abruptly, the passing car swerved uncontrollably, leading me to realize the driver noticed the truck a few yards ahead. Without more than a second to respond and to avoid the car from striking mine, I jolted the steering wheel to the right ramming into a deep roadside watercourse. Consequently, my right arm struck the middle console while the rest of my body sprung towards the dashboard. After the car impacted a cemented fixture, the car jumped and landed in my neighbor’s driveway two houses down. I slammed on the breaks and hurriedly put the car in park, anxiously wondering if the accident was

It was a sunny day and all was well; until we heard a bang sound come from in-front of us. Dad, Mom, Josh (my little brother), and myself all witnessed a red pick-up truck strike a SUV head on; but what we then realized was the red pick-up fleeing the scene. He sped past us going at least sixty mph down a hill through a fifty mph zone. We proceeded down the hill because we were heading home and it just so happened to be the same direction he fled. We saw him swerve around a car, but he did not get lucky trying to avoid the other car zooming around the corner in the other lane; he also hit that car…

The right, front turn signal launched from its socket, rapidly coming back down to land on the hood of the car. A silence stretches long between us. Layna dabs at her eyes with the sleeve of her thin sweater, then reaches down and grasps my red-tipped fingers as we approach our mother’s house. Without a word, we step up onto the porch stairs that rasp in complaint, and I hold my breath, waiting for the curtains to swish, and the glimpse of Mom’s beaming face before she bustled towards the front door in her excitement to see us, throwing open the door to smother us in hugs, all wrinkled skin and senior sweat, and the scent of home.…

When I realized what had happened I started to sweat bullets and my friends had such a shocked and mortified expression that it just made me more terrified. I backed the car up and went outside with the others to see the damage that the crash had caused and I almost wish I had not gotten out. The whole front bumper of the car seemed broken and I felt my hopes of it being “just a scratch” crash and burn inside me. We parked the car near the gas station to try and see what we could do to fix it which was almost nothing. The manager of the station even came outside and told us “just put it in the trunk and go!”…

I was eight and in California visiting with my vegetarian grandparents. We were being seated in a vegan restaurant for a late lunch. I sat there in the hard seat of my desk and waited patiently. The scent of Lysol was overwhelmingly powerful in the room, but I knew by the third week it would be overpowered by the smell of musty children and chalk dust. I could not wait for my new teacher to saunter up to me, eyes full of admiration, and give me my paper. I had worked hard on it for nearly two months during the summer prior to this new school year. Looking around the room at my new classmates, it was easy to tell who had done the summer assignments, especially with their conspicuous faces.…

Everyone has a haunting moment in their life, one that’s so traumatizing and horrible that it perpetually replays in their minds. For me, that moment occurred in the early days of summer 2015. I was stuck home babysitting my two little siblings for the day while the rest of my family was in Baton Rouge at some birthday party I didn't go to because I really didn’t like the entire parents hosting it. You know the type. The ones that don’t know what a blinker is.…

I looked up to my left and saw a guard rail with a river behind it, the car was heading towards it. My sister took control of the wheel and steered us the best she could towards the ditch. It was all green everywhere as the rear of the car hit the ditch first and spun us around, sending the front hitting the ditch as well. We spun around one more time, completing two 360’s. It might have been the wrong thought, but I was thinking about the airbags deploying at top speed, knocking us in the face, and injuring…
