Before Voltaire dedicated his life to writing, he first attempted was being a law student, then a lawyer 's apprentice, and finally as a secretary to a French diplomat, Voltaire attempted to fulfill his father 's wishes. In each case, he ended up abandoning his posts, sometimes amidst scandal. When he finally decided to devote his life to his writing he found himself in trouble with the French due to him writing about how much he despised their ruling; this had Voltaire exiled from Paris but they later overturned that ruling and allowed him back. Now looking at the Voltaire’s novel Candide, which was written during the time of the Enlightenment, we take notice that Candide is indeed facing some adversities. Unlike Voltaire, Candide was living a lavish life in Westphalia with the Baron, which is thought to be his uncle. Upon the Barons discovery of Candide’s love interest with Lady Cunègonde, his daughter, he quickly removed Candide from their castle.
