Personal Narrative: My Time In Counseling

First, I want to say thank you for giving me the tools to know how to navigate life. Though our time was short, I learned so much. Secondly, you had asked me to do a critique of my experience working with you in counseling. So, here it is…
Listening: I think having others share their stories, secrets, hopes, and fears is one of the greatest gifts anyone can give. I sincerely believe when someone shares their stories with you it becomes part of your own. I’m really grateful to have the chance to share my story with you. I don’t generally share with people as much as I’ve told you. You listened so intently and asked questions when needed. I realized through this process that I received the gift of you listening. I think that everyone brought forward a creative presentation, making their PSA their very own. I truly enjoyed this class and think that it followed through with the amount of learning potential it offered. 1. What did this class mean to you? To me, this class meant opening my eyes to even more topics and subtopics included with trauma healing, and then being able to take that knowledge and apply it in…

I believe that the introduction of personal stories added another level of familiarity with the group members. As a facilitator using personal stories allowed for my group members to get to know me and the way that I think, as well as provided a safe environment to share their personal stories as well. This ultimately allowed for us to get to know one another and build our group dynamics, whilst simultaneously critically reflecting and learning about the course material. All of the facilitation questions that I asked received fulfilling answers, as my peers answered the questions from a social work perspective, as well as using their own experiences with group facilitation. The group dynamics were incredibly interesting to me as the first facilitator, our similarities as well as…

Neukrug in Characteristics of the Effective Helper posed several interesting points while posing his findings on counselor effectiveness. Since I am at the very beginning of my counseling journey, it is my duty to dive deep into myself so I can transition my strengths and weaknesses as an individual and apply them into a professional helping role. According to my self-confidences, and what peers have expressed to me, I believe my strengths to lie within empathy, acceptance and open-mindedness. On the other hand, my weaknesses seem to be genuineness and competence. To start with, empathy comes fairly easy to me since I enjoy thoroughly enjoy listening to the problems of others.…

Firstly, as I sat with the clients, I saw that they understood that a friend is a person who shares. Secondly, I saw they understood what good characteristics of a good friend are. I also asked everyone what they shared and why this could be a part of being a good friend. The one thing that I noticed that could be changed, should this program be implemented again, I would share anything that I noticed that they did not share that could help them better define a good characteristic of a friend. In the last portion of this program, the action plan helped the clients to find a way to use all that was taught to be used when they left the…

He said it was ‘like a load off my shoulders’ that ‘I don’t have to do what you say, that we can work things out together’. He said that he felt more confident in himself. The conversation had been very significant for me as well and I remember it clearly to this day. Trevor’s words brought home to me the tenderness with which people bring the stories of their lives to us as therapists. They brought home to me a far greater appreciation of the hazards of giving advice and also how therapists can so often be invited into this position.…

Final Self Evaluation Establishing Ethos is one of the most important aspects of giving a speech. The audience’s perception of a speaker, is very important to their understanding and comprehension of one’s speech. In this public speaking course, I believe I have done a decent job in achieving positive ethos. Every time I delivered a speech I made sure to make eye contact with every member of the audience. This is good in establishing a positive ethos as it allowed me to make a personal connection with each member of the audience, making them feel more connected and interested in the speech.…
