While in an hour of free play, a student with low social interaction who had brought in his own snap game and wanted to choose one person to play the game with. When it came to choosing, 5-6 students wanted to play with him, all gathering around asking if they could play to.
What were your immediate thoughts?
My thoughts straight away, reflecting-in-action which ‘is to reflect on behaviour as it happens’ (Schon, 1983) were, I felt like I did not have the authority to calm this situation down or tell the children whom can and can not play the game as I am a volunteer and not technically a teacher. I have improved on how I react to difficult or challenging situations within the school, entering them with an open mind and the understanding that anything is possible and can be achieved if I deal with them or approach them in the right way. I also understand that the staff I work with are there to help and guide me in the right direction. When working with the children I now know that I should never have felt scared, and I should have believed in myself more to have been able to deal with it in the right way and the best way for all children involved and I have to teach and approach them with structure and confidence, knowing that I am the adult and am there to teach and guide them to the best of my ability and that everyday is a lesson for me and not just them. My improvements will benefit the children because I will act in a more professional manner, not backing away from a challenging situation but dealing with it head on, this will show the children that I know what I am doing and can find a solution to better their learning. The environment they learn in will be more of a confident and secure one and they feel they can come to me for help if they need to. Schon (1983) says the ability to reflect on action is ‘a defining characteristic of professional practice’ (infed.org, 2016) saying that being able to look back and reflect on your actions or teaching strategies, change and imply them to your practice is a good standard of teaching. Looking back and being part of a voluntary based setting and not having as much professional practice, refection in action and reflection on action will be something I learn more along the way and will use to improve with each passing
