Red, Red Wine: Song Analysis

Sia, a recording artist from Australia, recorded the song “Chandelier” in 2014. This is an electro-pop song that tells of a party girl who goes out with people frequently for a drink. However, she doesn’t have one or two drinks, she drinks until she loses control of herself. The girl drinks excessively in order to make her problems go away, similar to the man in the song “Red, Red Wine”. UB40 recorded the pop/soft rock song “Red, Red Wine” in 1968. It explains how a man is heartbroken and it leads to him drinking Red Wine until it makes him feel better or until he forgets. Both of these songs undercut the virtue of hope, because the people that the songs speak of lose hope that they will overcome their hurt and find love somewhere else. Instead, they drink themselves into oblivion so they won’t have to face their problems. Sia uses the excuse of heartbreak and hurt …show more content…
The lyrics read: “I’m gonna fly through the night, feel my tears as they dry.” It is like she wants to fly away from it all and just leave her problems behind. She also says “I’m holding on for dear life, won’t look down won’t open my eyes, keep my glass full until morning light, ‘cause I’m just holding on for tonight”. This is where her hopelessness shows. She is explaining how she has given up and is only going to hold on for so long. It almost seems like she is suicidal. Although he has never been an alcoholic, UB40 sings about alcoholism. “Red, Red Wine” is sung from the perspective of someone who has found out that drinking red wine is the only way to forget his problems. Very much like Sia, UB40’s reason for drinking is because of a heartbreak. However, he doesn’t have the credibility that she has to write about alcoholism because he has never experienced it. That is the difference in the two songs’ ethos. Sia has the credibility to write about alcoholism, but UB40 does

Top Ten Christian band Twenty One Pilots declared its musical manifesto three years ago in the song “Car Radio,” “I will try with every rhyme to come across like I am dying to let you know you need to try to think.” Twenty One Pilots’ hit “Stressed Out” is currently played on secular radio stations across the country and in Europe, and the duo is selling out concerts at every venue. Even though they are open about their faith, the band continues to sneak like a hacker through the world’s default gospel-rejection mechanism. While the dialectic voice confuses secular reporters, the message of salvation carries through to their listeners. “When I first listened to their music I was like, I’m not alone.…

On a personal level, when i was younger this my father would play this song (as well as Miley Cyrus’s “Party in the USA”) in our living room, and my sisters and I would just dance around to it and play it over and over again for hours. Regarding transcendentalism, this song shares a similar theme to “Don’t Stop Believin’”, as its refrain states: I'd like to make myself believe, That planet Earth turns slowly, It's hard to say that I'd rather stay awake when I'm asleep,'Cause everything is never as it seems”(Fireflies), lending itself to the idea that people should believe that anything can happen, and have big dreams, because everyone’s life is precious and…

The primary source is a song. This is unique because it was created for purposes that don’t need censorship. It was most likely meaningful to the creator of the song, not something that he was told to create. The song is about a relationship in which she is trying to please her partner, to meet their expectation, but they are expecting too much from her. In the end, they ask too much - she is only human and there's only so much she can handle before she breaks. In the song, she sings, “I can bite my tongue, I can stay awake for days if that's what you want” she has to almost tiptoe around him to please him ultimately becoming someone who she is not. Throughout the song, she talks about how a woman has to impress a man to be with him, has to be perfect and meet his expectations and if she doesn't he breaks her down. She has to consciously mold herself up to something she is not, because it is what he wants.…

He describes getting everything he wanted, however when he sees how it is impossible he decides to give up his dream and wish he was born again. After finding out his now-ex girlfriend has been unfaithful, he portrays diligence to harass her by narrating his plan of action for revenge in the lyrics, “I’m gonna aim my headlights into your bedroom windows, throw empty beer cans at both of your shadows”. Thus, implying the desensitization of society into perceiving violent portrayals in breakups are of the norm. The binary in this song is that due to his girlfriend cheating he is obligated to act violently to shame the woman, to which he justifies his actions in the lyrics, “You know you broke the wrong heart, baby, you drove me redneck crazy.” His motives are excused supposedly due to his broken heart and plays ‘victim’, where as the real victim is left oppressed. Statistically, women are much more likely to be the target of stalking threats (ARS, 2010), this is reinforced by the ominous lyric, “I’m the kind of guy that shows up at your house at 3a.m.”…

The Crow & The Butterfly A musician’s inspiration for a song can come from anywhere, even their own subconscious, and that proves true in the case of my favorite song “The Crow & The Butterfly” by Shinedown. The singer of the band and the writer of the song, Brent Smith, has said his inspiration came from a dream he had about a mother dealing with the death of a child. The song to me represents loss in any sense that is relevant to the listener. The emotion you feel while listening to the lyrics can speak to anyone in different aspects of their life.…

This song talks about the speaker who is abused by her boyfriend but she stands by him because she loves him. This is similar to when we find out that Mayella was abused by her father but still loves him because well, it’s her father. They both show unhealthy relationships and how bad things can be at home. OutKast, a popular rap group throughout the nineties and early 2000s, has a renowned song entitled “Hey Ya!” which features the smooth flows of Andre 3000 and hard hitting rhymes of Big Boi. The song has been a huge hit for years and is virtually known by every American under the age of thirty. When the song was released in 2003, I was just three years old, but had already adopted my dad’s love for music and I frequented the kitchen tile as my dance floor whenever music was playing. OutKast’s song “Hey Ya!” holds a different weight than most other songs I grew up around because it is one of few memories I remember vividly about my childhood.…
