For a girl who has always listened to what her parents listen to it is easy to see why she might want to explore new things. Beneatha has to reach outside of her musical comfort zone in order to really be able to form her own opinion. The first type of music she try’s s tribal which is allowing her to connect with her ancestral roots the song she is listening to is “a dance of welcome”( Act two Scene one). The dance is welcoming “men back to the village” from “ out hunting or something” (Act two Scene one). Even though she might not know exactly what the meaning is behind the song she is enjoying it maybe do to the fact that she is learning about her heritage so that she can use it as a sense of individuality. She is definitely breaking away from the norms of her society and the thoughts of her family. Music might not define one's identity but it is a part of one's personality which helps shape identity.
