A Raisin in the Sun varies in many ways between the novel and the movie; however, the main events remain the same. The movie did an amazing job of capturing the essence of A Raisin in the Sun, but there were some major scenes that the directors cut out due to time constraints. The movie also did an incredible job of portraying the characters emotions and feelings. Even though the movie did portray the book incredibly well, it differed from the book in many important ways. The movie and book differed in many ways. One of the most significant differences is the fact that Mrs. Johnson was completely cut out of the movie. Though she only played a small role in the book, it is always a major decision when an entire character is removed from a literary work. Another important change from the book was the setting. In the book, the setting is mainly in the …show more content…
One of the most important similarities is the check. Both in the novel and the movie, the $10,000 check plays an important role and it is split with $3500 going toward the house and $6500 going to Walter even though he was supposed to put $3000 in the bank for Beneatha’s education. Another important similarity is that in both the book and the movie, Bobo showed up and told Walter that their money was gone and Willy had skipped town. Though this happened different ways in the novel and the movie, it was an extremely significant event in both. Another similarity between the book and the movie was the scene in which Walter gave Travis 50 cents. If the director was going to cut a scene, then I thought this would be it. At first glance, it does not seem to be very important, but the importance in this scene is that is shows the reader/viewer how poor they really are that they cannot even afford to spend 50 cents on something at school. There are many similarities between the book and the novel, as well as

A Raisin in the Sun Title Controversy; Emotion v. Plot Titles are not to be taken lightly as they are what a reader keeps in mind throughout a piece. “Mother to Son” and “Harlem” are both written by Langston Hughes and portray the struggles of maintaining a dream during difficult times. “Mother to Son” uses the extended metaphor of a staircase that parallels the struggles and overall actions in the play A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry, while “Harlem” uses graphic images in order to form a well developed motif and mood of the idealistic dream, which is matched in the play. As a title is meant to add to a piece of work, and enhance a certain idea the author deems significant, Lorraine Hansberry contemplated using the title The Crystal…

A few important character connections and details were in the book that were left out in the movie. In the book, for example, Kim and Mia’s relationship wasn’t as detailed in the movie. It didn’t show their fight like it did in the book and all of their childhood between the two seemed to be missing from the movie. Mia and Kim had some important things that occurred in their childhood which I thought was important and should have been included in the movie. Her grandparents also weren’t in the movie as much as they were in the book.…

Also later in the movie it showed how johnny and tyrone looked because it showed how johnny was lighter than explained in the book. Plus it shows how Lloyds life style looks when dave and LeAlan go to wake Lloyd up so they can start their interviewsfor that day. Another difference is how much violence is despayed in the movie like when LeAlan and Lloyd were walking down the street to see a friend or a homi and a car drove by with men shooting the guys on the street and how LeAlan and Lloyd were able to make it to safety and get out nof their as quick as they could. Throughout the movie and the book there are many differences and similarities that seem to pop out. Although there are differences that I didn’t see until I read the book and watched the movie, there are also similarities that I didn’t think would happen. More characters appear, Hannah is called Chaya by the camp people, Hannah writes numbers on her arm for grandpa, all these along with many other things happen in the book that doesn't happen in the movie. There are characters in the book that aren’t mentioned in the book such as Yitschak, Yitscacks kids, Wolfe, and more. However, the differences really stood out. As an example, my first noticeable difference is when Gatsby in the book is described as being a bootlegger associating with gangsters and getting all his fortune from illegal activities. “I’ll tell you God’s truth.” (Fitzgerald 65) In the movie he is just portrayed as some mysterious very rich handsome person. A play and a novel are two very different ways of telling a plot of a story. In the play A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry the audience is able to feel involved in the story through many aspects. Usually in novels it is consistent with one point of view through the story. However, in a play the audience is able to gain perspective from most of the characters. The stage directions in a play gives the reader an insight on the actions taken among a character.…
