A Raisin In The Sun Ruth Character Analysis Essay

Ruth is a very skeptical, realistic and selfless woman and emotionally and mentally the strongest person in the play A Raisin in the Sun. Ruth is realistic about everything, she tries to protect and take care of her family even when they’re being disrespectful and rude. In the play A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry, Ruth is motivated by her family. Ruth’s objective is to protect her family and she does this in multiple occasions in this play, and it shows her selflessness and her determination and her work ethic. Ruth is motivated by her family and will protect them at all costs. Travis is taking a while in the bathroom and Walter suggests that Travis wakes up earlier so other people could use the bathroom as well. “It ain’t his fault that he can’t get to bed no earlier nights ‘cause he got s bunch of crazy good-for-nothing clowns sitting up running their mouths in what’s supposed to be his bedroom at ten o’clock at night” (553). Ruth and Walter are arguing ing about the business Walter wants to get into. “Why? You want to know why? ‘Cause we’re all tied up in a race that don’t know how to do nothing but moan, pray and have babies”(584). Ruth is being realistic and Walter just wants his dreams to come true. Ruth is trying to take care of the family and Walter doesn’t make it easy for Ruth to help him and doesn’t make it any easier for everyone to get along. Even with Walter being rude and disrespectful, Ruth has to deal with her own feelings and struggles.
