Character Essay In the play A Raisin in the Sun, written by Lorraine Hansberry, Walter and Beneatha are the two characters who make up most of the plot throughout the play by using their actions, what they say, and how they interact with one another. One character that influenced the plot in the play is Walter. He’s greedy about the money because he keeps talking about it and how he’s going to start a business with it. He’s also a very disagreeable person. Everything that someone else says in the house that he doesn’t like, he always disagrees with them because it’s not what he wants to hear. She’s a very opinionated person because she says what she thinks is right. By her doing this influences the plot because it causes Walter to argue because it’s not what he wants to hear so he’s going to argue with her. She’s very rebellious against what Walter says because it’s not what she wants to here. She keeps on telling Walter that he can’t just take the money and start a business with it and do whatever he wants with it cause it’s not even his money to be spending. She believes that Mama can do whatever she wants to do with that money. Beneatha is a very stubborn girl, she believes everything should go her way but if something doesn’t go her way then she starts arguing with everyone so they’ll change their mind and agree with her. She’s hoping that Mama will tell Walter to stop and she’ll help her through school. Beneatha says, “That money belongs to Mama, Walter, and it’s for her to decide how she wants to use it.” She is getting very mad at him because he keeps talking about how he’s going to start a business. Beneatha said to him “You- you are a nut. Thee is mad, boy.” She’s calling him stupid because he keeps talking about the business, but he’s not going to be able to start the business because Mama won’t allow him to start it.
