A dream is something that benefits a person or group of individuals. Dreams tend to be for the better and they are to improve one’s life. In A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry, one of the main characters is Beneatha Younger. Beneatha like many others has a dream; hers is to become a doctor. Beneathas personality traits of selfishness, independent and motivated all affect her dream to become a doctor and improve her overall happiness. One personality trait that affects Beneathas dream is her selfishness about the things that she personally believes are right or wrong. One page 37 Beneatha says, “I don’t care if she [mama] wants to buy a house or a rocket ship or just nail it up [money] somewhere and look at it. It’s hers. Not ours-hers” (Hansberry 37). This specific quote is explaining how Beneatha wants Walter Lee to know that the money he wants belongs to mama and she should be able to buy what she wants with her own money and not be guilted into giving it to Walter Lee. This is Beneatha saying that George is in control of his own actions and feelings and she does not have to agree with him, she can think for herself, and it may be different from what he thinks.
