A Raisin in the Sun - Argumentative Research Essay
The play A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry was written in the 1950’s and produced on stage in 1959. Lorraine Hansberry wrote three plays and one book in her lifetime. Lorraine’s first play to become a success was A Raisin in the Sun, she was only 29 years old at the time. Lorraine was youngest American to have written a play, the first African American to win the Best Play of the Year Award of the New York Drama Critics, and New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award. We get a sense of how each character is first hand from the actions and words they use. The relationship between characterization and conflict in this play can easily be argued. “Raisin at first seems a plea for racial tolerance or a fable of men’s overcoming an insensitive society, but the simple eloquence of the characters elevates the play onto a universal representation of all people’s hopes, fears, and dream.“ (Cheney, 55)
Each characters dream brings them a new representation in the story. Lena’s dream is to have a happy family; as of right now her family is represented by the plant. The plant is withered and dying this shows that her family is broken and falling apart more and more each day but with all faith given Lena gives the plant love care and nourishment doing all possible to save its life and make it happy. Throughout the story we see it strengthen little by little at the end of the story the plant is green and full of life; like the family they are united as one and happy as ever! Ruth’s dream is to move into a bigger home.
