Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines a stereotype as “a standardized mental picture that is held in common by members of a group and that represents an oversimplified opinion, prejudice attitude, or uncritical judgment”. Stereotypes can be very harmful to the members of the groups that they are imposed upon. With everything going on in the world today, one should take a moment to look at the impact of stereotypes and the harm that they have caused and continue to cause, especially stereotypes that are applied to certain groups based on the color of their skin, culture, or religious beliefs. America in particular has a history full of harmful stereotypes and prejudices, many of which were directed towards individuals of African-American descent. It is important to know those stereotypes and work to break them. …show more content…
The family consists of individuals with different personalities, beliefs, and dreams. Even with all of their differences they are tired of stereotypes, and of feeling like they are worth less than others, all while they do the same old thing and their dreams are constantly being deferred. Out of the five there is one character in particular that stood out, her name is Beneatha. Beneatha, is an outspoken and open minded college student that dreams of breaking the stereotypes that are applied to her. Beneatha’s highly motivated and optimistic personality does not let anything interfere with what she wants.
