A Push Gift Analysis

Decent Essays
For almost 40 weeks, a mom-to-be shares her body with a developing fetus, enjoying and enduring all the anxiety, discomfort, emotional imbalance, delight, excitement, wonderment and so many other sentiments that reside within her during that time. One day the discomfort becomes pain and then the pain escalates and she knows it's time. With those she loves by her side, she labors with vexation on her face, perspiration on her skin and love in her heart.
It all culminates in the final PUSH.......... PUSH.............PUSH!
And then, something beautiful............... a gift. A stunned, mucus-smeared, silken-haired, curled-up, tiny, precious, tear-inducing, smile-producing, heart-capturing little newborn baby. The new mommy gushes with emotion over all that has occurred since conception and its culmination in the birth of her precious baby.

This is called a push gift or, more popularly, a push present. A push gift is a gift for a new mom, whether she actually pushed her baby out or had her baby by c-section. The gift is not for the baby, but something for the mom personally.
Giving a push present shows a new mom that, although the baby is the focus, she is recognized for all that she has been through.
Birthing the baby is celebrated with a push

The description of the room she gave birth in creates imagery and establishes a peaceful visualization for her audience and illustrates her perspective. The author also uses contrast by displaying the negative aspects of giving birth in a hospital compared to giving birth at home.…

In Annie Dillard’s excerpt, the narrator follows the process after a new birth. The bustle of the obstetrical ward is documented carefully, by the narrator listing each individual step precisely and carefully. The nurses are often seen with a bored expression on their face while the new parents gaze at their children with wonder and amazement. The narrator adds her own personal emotional remarks to the monotonous routine of the nurses. These rhetorical devices contrast the different reactions from the nurse and the narrator to the new born child: a quotidien event versus an extraordinary one.…
