The movie did a good job at demonstrating the symptoms of bipolar disorders and the effects it has on everyone it comes in contact with. It also demonstrated the connection it has to genetics and family history. While the movie did offer a small comedic prospective it also emphasized the importance of medical intervention in managing the condition. According to Johns Hopkins Health Library, “approximately 5.7 million Americans suffer from bipolar disorder” (www.psychguides.com). However, it is estimated that 51% of people with this condition go untreated in any given year. Further, statistics suggest men are far less likely than women to seek help from mental health professionals. Most likely because of the stigma men think are associated with it.
To summarize, a bipolar disorder and manic depression is a very serious condition. If undiagnosed or untreated, it can be just like a bomb waiting to explode. The damage of which can be felt by all those around. Bipolar disorders can make it impossible to perform or keep a job, it can damage to personal relationships, and sufferers usually experience a loss of self-confidence and control.
