Hensel Phelps Internship

Improved Essays
Prior to my internship with Hensel Phelps, I had almost zero experience working for a construction company. The summer prior to this, I shadowed a quality control personnel and safety coordinator from the construction company Aztec, Inc. in El Paso, Texas. The project was an interior renovation of an old army rocket facility that was to be transformed into a general space for office work in Ft. Bliss. The work being performed there was abatement, painting, and carpet installation. While the project did give me a list of abilities to put on my resume such as “learnt how to inspect paint” and “inspected carpet installation for quality” and other general things, I was disappointingly never given any hands-on experience. Therefore, when I was offered …show more content…
The orientation was to help us transition from the mindset of a student to a fully fledged Hensel Phelps team member. The orientation provide us with helpful information that we could use as a resource to document what we learned and to keep up with information that was specific to our jobsite experience. Whilst there, we were presented with several courses over the company’s course of conduct, Equal Employee Opportunity , anti-harassment policies, and an overview of the safety …show more content…
Leo and I were both given passes to park at the Manor Garage that is located adjacent to the stadium. The main office for the building was located inside the stadium in a ticket booth at the North End Zone of the stadium because it was deemed that a trailer would not fit in with the aesthetic of the campus. We arrived at the stadium at eight in the morning and were then given a tour of stadium. There we learned of Hensel Phelps’ long relationship with the University of Texas and especially that of stadium.
Hensel Phelps has been working on the UT DKR stadium for over 12 years. Their largest involvement with the stadium was the construction of the North End Zone which was completed in 2008. That scope of work included a new outdoor plaza memorial, additional upper deck seats, club space, and a two level basement. From there, Hensel Phelps was involved with the construction of a Sports Medicine & Strength Training Facility, Women’s Volleyball Courts, the Stark Center, Athletic Offices Infill, renovations of Bellmont Hall, and overall stadium maintenance and renovations. All work done at the stadium has been done was overseen by superintendent, Shane Stone, who was the superintendent while I was

David Pryor knew he was beat. He knew it from the start, but he spoke from his heart, picked up support from Cliff Gibson, but they went down strongly but quietly Thursday as the University of Arkansas board of trustees voted 8-2 for a $160 million expansion to Reynolds Razorback Stadium. It wasn't denied the project most likely will be more in the neighborhood of $200 million when completed. Before doing the math, which shows that is more than $60,000 for each of the proposed 3,000-plus additional seats -- all in luxury suites most of us will only see through binoculars -- understand a big part of that money is for the new athletic facility that will have underground parking so, as one former trustee said, it will keep the administration from…

Kezar Stadium was the 49ers first home and where they played for the franchise's first 24-years. Viewed outside the prism of excitement, the stadium was an archaic and tattered one, in striking contrast to the stadiums they play in today. Kezar was designed by Willis Polk & Company and built in 1925 for $300,000. It was a place where the cold bite of the Pacific Ocean would cut right through you, chilling you to the bones.…

I was lucky enough to interview Brad Ciolek the scouting administrator for the Baltimore Orioles. Brad and I had our discussion on the phone over fall break, which lasted about 30-40 minutes. Mr.Ciolek told me that after playing high school baseball, he decided that he enjoyed baseball so much that he wanted to attempt to make a career out of it. While discussing his professional life with me, I found out that Brad attained this position through interning with the Orioles in 2011; briefly leaving the organization and returning in 2013 when a job opening presented itself. Mr. Ciolek is very important to the Orioles organization due to the fact that he is in charge of roughly 700 players scouting reports each year.…

The movie “Friday Night Lights” is based on a real life best seller “Friday Night Lights: A Town, A Team, and a Dream”, by author H.G. Bissinger. The movie’s setting takes place at Permian High School in Odessa, Texas in 1988 when the tension between races were still strong in some areas of the south. There is some focus in some areas of the film that has to do with racial tension and the ongoing conflict between the student body and the city as a whole. Even though desegregation had happened by the time the book was written and the film was made, the schools at times were still racially divided. I also felt the movie showed how this football program exploited their black athletes.…

Sports and Sustainability. Even for environmentally-conscious sports fans, not often enough do we see both words in the same sentence. It is true that when encouraged to either promoting sustainability or simply embracing it, most sports organizations have failed us and themselves. Nevertheless, teams are building new stadiums which are proving to be beacons for sustainability and green living as a whole. Four of the seven stadiums on this list are either owned or being occupied by NFL teams.…
