Growing up, every child had an idea of what a princess should be by the information they read in picture books. A princess in these books were represented mainly as women who were skinny, no independence, damsels in distress, and view as just beautiful objects. However, this idea expresses to children women are incapable of performing any “manly duties” and have a voice of their own. A princess should be brave, smart, independent, strong, be herself and a leader. Princesses should be brave and not wait for a man to come to the rescue when situations are difficult. “Sometimes bravery involves laying down your life for something bigger than yourself or someone’s. Sometimes it involves giving up everything you have ever known…” (Roth, p. 140). In the Disney movie, Mulan, it concerns of a young woman who dresses and acts like a man in order to take her ill father’s place in a war because woman where not allowed to fight. She left everything she knew in order to spare her father from entering another war. This sends the message that women are incapable of saving themselves and men are the leaders. However, in the movie Pocahontas, Pocahontas is the daughter of the chief and leads the village to side with her when a group of British people came to visit their land and save the life of a man named, John Smith. “Leadership is not about titles, positions or flowcharts. Its about one life influencing another.”(Maxwell). She convinced the village that it was unjustified to kill John Smith because of their hatred towards the invaders and told them to stand together to fight for their land.
