“Stories for nighttime and some for the day” is a collection of fantasy short stories written by Ben Loory. This book contains 40 short stories and of them all, my personal favorites are “The Book”, “UFO: A Love Story”, and “The Snake in the Throat”. “The Book” is a story about a woman who goes insane about a book she had bought that she claimed had no writing in it. After not being able to return the book, she went on an absolute rampage as she sees other people reading it, and it becoming a best seller. This bothered her so much that she ranted on the television, radio show, and even wrote her own book about it.…
“Shiloh” MY TITLE In the beginning of the short story, “Shiloh”, author Bobbie Ann Mason projects the love story of Leroy and Norma Jean and the struggles they endured during their marriage, while Norma Jean is home and Leroy is out on the road driving his eighteen wheeler. After Leroy was injured and returned home, Norma Jean seems to be try to obtain the manlier role in the relationship by the way she is perceiving her body and working out all the time. Leroy is showing a more feminine side by doing crafts and needlepoint, because he feels like he can’t be himself anymore. It is sort of funny that the name Leroy in French means “king”, which is far from what Leroy portrays.…
Passing and The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao place an emphasis on physical features. Although both novels take place in different times and settings, both novels are creating and representing women as exotic sexualized objects because of their gender and race. Larsen and Diaz’s emphasis on the blackness of female characters demonstrates the timelessness of the importance of skin color. Irene’s thoughts when she sees Clare : “Did that woman, could that woman, somehow know that here before her very eyes on the roof of the Drayton sat a Negro?”…
A lifetime seems like such a long time, when the end approaches it feels so short possible unfulfilled. Appropriately, a flash or dream, unimaginable amounts of time spent doing things you like and dislike. One writer, Dudley Clendinen wrote an article in The New York Times titled “The Good Short Life” published July, 9, 2011. Clendinen creates his theory of a good short life, using personal facts and first-hand experience and the absolute conclusion of this disease. His conclusion to this demoralizing disease “self-euthanasia”, the act of intentionally ending one’s life to relieve pain and suffering.…
Throughout multiple short stories, various characters take extreme risks in order to improve their quality of living. The short stories “Contents of the Dead Man’s Pocket” by Finney, and “Two Friends” by Maupassant, “Story of Damon and Pythias” by anonymous, best display how the main characters take gambles in order to obtain their desired life. One should take risks in order to improve their quality of life. A quality life was not determined by a little piece of yellow paper.…
Maxwell Maltz, author of a novel that explains how one can improve their self image, writes, “You will act like the sort of person you conceive yourself to be.” How a person acts is directly related to the level of self esteem they have. It is natural that a person with vanity carries themselves more confidently and is more assertive, whereas a lack of dignity negatively affects their attitude and outlook. Our impressions of ourselves are perplexed by daily comparisons to those surrounding us. I Stand Here Ironing, The Storyteller, and The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber all provide a character that relates how they act due to their morale.…

Once upon a time, there were three human sisters. Their names were Maia, Phoebe, and Megan. They lived in a great swirling forest, in a tiny cottage with only two rooms. Those two rooms were all they needed, for they only needed tools for when they were out, books and such, and a place to sleep.…
Introduction In Ernest Hemingway’s short story “The Short Happy Life Of Francis Macomber,” Hemingway uses the author’s craft of perspective along with dialogue and internal dialogue to create a multi-part claim that develops an overall negative characterization of the three main characters. Hemingway develops the characterization of Wilson, Margaret, and Macomber by using multiple perspectives as he threads a negative tone throughout the story. Paragraph 1; Wilson (Knowledgeable) Throughout this story, Robert Wilson shows his immense knowledge concerning the safari.…
In Richard Taylor’s article The Meaning of Life, Taylor creates a model of a meaningless life in order to undertake the larger question of ‘what is a meaningful life?’. This is done as a way of addressing the ambiguous nature of what it means to live a meaningful life, as meaning in this sense is an elusive term (Taylor, 22). By determining what a life without meaning would look like, Taylor hopes to gain a sense of what it is that allows for meaning in a life. Upon creating a model of a meaningless life, Taylor will apply it to human life as a way of determining what meaning is, and if it is present in human life. For the purpose of this paper, I will begin by providing an account of Taylor’s argument.…
The Story of an Hour and The Whirling of Life are both great stories with great topics. There are many similarities and differences between the two. One similarity is the topic of death. This is both physically and mentally. In The Story of an Hour, Mrs. Mallards husband physically died.…
A memoir I would recommend to all people whom have any interest in human history or…
Fairy tales have had one of the most prominent roles in shaping twenty-first century society. This is because these tales have moved away from their oral purpose aimed at teaching a moral to audiences of all ages and towards an audience dedicated more towards children through modern technological, art and production advantages. It is true that fairy tales have been somewhat removed from their original purpose, hence the reason for much of the critique about the relevance of tales in the twenty-first century. I disagree with the critics, as what many do not realize, however, is that it is necessary for the fairy tale to be constantly under reconstruction in order to meet the needs of each era. It is known that fairy tale origins are from the…
In the short stories “Eve’s Diary” and “Extracts from Adam’s Diary”, author Mark Twain takes a comical approach on the lives of two characters from The Book of Genesis. These characters, known as Adam and Eve, write diary entries every day as they take on the undiscovered world and fall in love. Without each other, there would be no balance, only chaos. Throughout the stories, Twain conveys an central message that although men and women are completely different, they need each other. The usage of humor and stereotypes within “Eve’s Diary” and “Extracts from Adam’s Diary” help project this important message.…
