“Without censorship, things can get terribly confused in the public mind”- General William Westmoreland. Censorship can be justified for a few reasons, control panic and fear, minimize risks in national security, prevent pollution of children’s minds, keep children safe even if the parents are not present to do so themselves, keep certain individuals or groups from being offended, preventing plagiarism, and prevent false advertising.
The world is full of terrible, heinous things and sometimes when someone hears about a rather foul topic they elevate the situation by starting and spreading rumors. Someone spreading a rumor can be harmful because of all the false information flying around potentially creating more chaos and havoc than the original information could cause in the first place. Imagine a scenario where all kinds of information is allowed into the general, is this a good scenario, or a bad one? The spread of rumors can be stopped at the source by the government. Government uses online databases to store everything from Military operations to Agriculture. In June, 2015 a large-scale breach of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management announced it had been the target of a breach of epic proportions. The final record of how many records were stolen were approximately 21.5 million. Information targeted in the breach included personally identifiable information such as Social Security numbers, as well as names, dates and places of birth, and addresses. It has been addressed as one of the largest data breaches of American history. Without censorship keeping important stuff away from citizens and potentially terrorist groups, there would be a lot more
