A Poison Tree Theme Essay

In these two writings, there is a common theme of relationships, however, the authors use anger to show it. All of the characters are angry at some point, even though the anger isn’t blatantly obviously there sometimes, it still lingers. Anger doesn’t always have an effect on relationships, as long as there isn’t too much anger. However, when it builds up, it has a huge effect. In “A Poison tree”, Blake tells about a positive relationship before the negative one, which shows the huge difference between the two. Blake shows the difference between positive and negative relationships, “I was angry with my friend” (Blake, 1), but he shows the connection between them. A friend would be a positive relationship, but anger is a negative feeling (most of the time). In “The Cask of Amontillado”, the characters are a bit, more ironically displayed with their anger and relationship. Deceiving others is hard sometimes, but deceiving yourself is practically impossible. The speaker in “A Poison Tree”, “told it not, my wrath did grow” (Blake, 1). The speaker easily hid their feelings from their enemy, but the feelings built up inside of them because they can’t hide their feelings from themself. The anger built up and came out in a brutal way. The narrator of “The Cask of Amontillado” deceived their friend Fortunato into going and tasting a cask of amontillado. Montressor used reverse psychology, “I perceive you are afflicted, the vaults are insufferably damp” (Poe, 6), and got Fortunato into the cellar under false pretenses.
