Literacy Narrative Assignment Rachel Gurich P. 3A My first day of school in Colorado was completely ridiculous. I knew not one person and I felt as if I did not do one thing correctly. Moving here from North Carolina when I was four changed my life completely, I was away from my family who I lived with my whole life, thrown into a school with a bunch of kids who lived here since they were born and told to “make friends.” This changed the next 13 years of my life to something I can never picture not having. The first four years, both my parents had full time jobs and my grandma helped raise me a lot, she taught me so many manners and how to behave, she even ended up living across the street from me for 2 of those years, they were rough for my parents, new baby, just moving, having to find jobs, making friends, and getting food on the table for me. Thats where my amazing family came in, with bringing home cooked meals…

As I brainstormed about things that I carry, nothing stood out. Not a single prized-possession, no metaphoric symbols, no family heirlooms, not even an everyday object that I could somehow pull a deeper meaning out of came to mind. I had no words to describe what I carry, nothing at all. And I then realized that I couldn’t have described it any better. I carry nothing.…

On the last day of school in eighth grade, when my parents told me that we were moving to the United States, all I could think of was that I was going to meet President Obama. Frankly, the only thing I knew about the country back then was Barack Obama and Tom Cruise. I was nervous and excited at the same time about visiting this wonderland because I had never dreamed of living in America of all places. I remember panicking about how I was going to introduce myself to others and what it was going to be like living with people and in places you’ve never seen before in your life except for Hollywood movies. On the other hand, I was really excited about the fact that I will finally have an opportunity to visit places like NASA, the World Trade…

My family resides in the sub-Saharan nation of Rwanda. My dad’s family - which I know much about- migrated from Mozambique and Ethiopia, whereas all of my mother’s family originated from Ethiopia. The threats posed by Arabs in Ethiopia and Portuguese in Mozambique are among the major reasons behind my forefathers’ migration. Apart from a few who were Jewish, most of them practiced African traditional religions. Their languages varied from Bantu languages to Portuguese.…

Being myself is effortless over attempting to mimic others’ behaviors. When I am true to myself, I am not required to stress so much about anyone contradicting or having negative opinions to say when I do not choose the same decisions as them. The pressure to look like everyone around and conform to society decreases as I learn my own self worth. Showing my own character by doing what I trust is correct, dressing the way I am comfortable in and by not letting people's opinion influence my decisions , has permitted me to grow as a person. For example, I participate in activities that I enjoy and take classes that I find accommodating, to allow myself to stay true to myself.…
