A Personal Composition Analysis

When we first began Composition I, I did not believe I would ever pass this extremely difficult class. Coming into to the class with not a lot of knowledge may seem impossible, but Somehow, I have been able to maintain high grades all semester. There have been many times where I have had to give up some of my personal free time in order to meet the deadline given to us by Mrs. Garth. Throughout the first semester of Composition I, I realized the strengths and weaknesses I have in writing essays. To begin, the first essay we wrote in class was a narrative essay on a moment that changed our lives. I wrote about the time that I pulled over to help a homeless couple with two children. This was the easiest essay we did all year because we just …show more content…
Garth. The presidential election paper was simple because all I had to do was choose three topics to focus on and write Clinton and Trump’s views on each. It was easy to find research on this topic because at the time the election was the only thing anyone ever talked about. The next research paper we did we got to choose what we wanted to write about. I chose to write about new safety rules being put into effect this season. This paper was a lot harder to write because I could not find as much information as I would have liked to and did not know much about the topic. Partly the hard part of this assignment was my fault because I should have chose a better topic that I could write a good deal about, but I know now to think carefully when making a decision on my topic. The last research paper our class wrote we got a long list of prompts we could choose from. I chose to write my paper on the open carry handgun law. Although this paper was two thousand words, it seemed to be the easiest to me. I actually enjoyed writing about the topic and learning other things that I did not know about the open carry handgun law. The research papers helped me realize that writing a paper is more than just slapping words on a page. You actually have to take your time and read through the research and plug in different

Throughout this portfolio I will demonstrate to my instructor and peers my development throughout our course, including the challenges and successes. I hope my portfolio will serve as a helpful source for me to refer back to in future classes, and aid as a guide for future students and their journey through college. In the beginning of first semester, in English Composition 121, I had preconceived ideas as to what the expectations would be for this class based on my experience eleven years ago. I had pre-determined how I would approach this class and what I was going to do, so never once did I expect to learn something useful.…

Forty-nine days later The Chronicle of Higher Education published another paper in response and direct contrast to Teller’s October paper entitled “No, We’re Not Teaching Composition ‘All Wrong’” by Emily Shearer Stewart. Teller and Stewart both work as English faculty members of United States colleges. Teller is a professor of English at College of the Sequoias, while Stewart is an assistant professor of English and Philosophy at Del Mar College.…

Throughout English Composition 1, I have learned several crucial writing skills. Writing skills that will benefit me in other classes, outside of school, and during my future college years. Not only will these benefit my overall writing and making it flow better, it will all in all make more sense to the readers. Even though I learned many skills and objectives during this semester, four skills really stood out to me. Cohesion, comma usage, the use of satire, and how to write a definitional essay.…

Like I previously stated I learned how to do many things with my writing this semester. The first essay we wrote, a narrative, was probably my favorite essay to write. Although it was my favorite, it was definitely not my best. I wrote my essay and felt like it was complete and worthy to turn in. Little did I know that was not the case.…

The essay that really stood out for me was the first one we did in class. It was called “Remembering an event”, I wrote about the first time that I had moved out of my parent’s home and decided to live with my girlfriend. I also had become a newly father at the time so I was put into a lot of pressure to make it on my own. I wrote about my financial difficulties and about how my optimistic I was with everything at the time. I ended up putting myself in a horrible situation due to many factors for instance my girlfriend losing her job, spending my savings, and after I saw my savings disappear.…

I was not an excellent writer at the beginning of the school year, but I can gladly say now that I have inherited more writing skills that I will benefit from in the future. One of those skills is being able to reflect on every angle on my topic to allow me to organize my ideas accurately. This skill is beneficial to learn, for it helped with my report essay to acquire the focus of my paper more clearly. Moreover, this skill helped me write papers in my other classes more easily and efficiently. Likewise, my voice can be read strongly throughout the personal narrative essay, because the passion I had for my topic was an emotional one.…

The papers weren 't too bad to write. I can actually say that I enjoyed writing a few of them because the topic was something that would interest me on any given day. There were three topics that stood out to me: race/ethnicity, deviance and norm, and social class. When I first saw the syllabus, I instantly knew paper four would interest me the most which was on race and ethnicity in America. This was a topic that instantly caught my eye, because…

We wrote a lot of papers after reading a novel about what we thought about either the book or how the character responded. We also did a lot of research papers on current events each year I took English. I also did a research paper every year for four years of high school. Most of the papers I wrote were usually 1000 words or more. The research papers were usually either 5-8 pages long and had to be a 1000 words or more and just having a picture on a page didn’t count.…

English Composition I taught me a lot about myself, including how to be a better college student, through the process of writing. At the beginning of the year, I was not very excited about having to write argumentative papers. This is because I did not care enough about the assigned topics to have an opinion. But, I did learn a lot that I would not have known otherwise from having to research information about the topics I chose to write about. For example, in paper #2, I wrote about the niqab and how I believe that it is oppressive to women.…

Indicator of First Essay As everyone knows, correct grammar in making an argument, a valid reason in supporting an opinion, and great evidence in confirming a reason are all important parts of critical writing skills. These essay skills were also my key indicators in my first essay. In particular, grammar was the part on which I spent most of my time for the paper, because the ability to deliver an argument with proper grammar is my weakest point. In this class, however, my faulty reading and ability to understand the story became another vulnerable point, because a literary analysis essay needs adequate comprehension of the story itself. After the first essay, the biggest enlightenment for me was that if I did not fully understand the story, I could not write a good essay, even if I had used correct grammar.…
