The most simplistic quote that proves true of the argument is “easy choices, hard life. Hard choices, easy life”(Jerzy Gregorek). Within the short stories Totem written by Thomas King and A Perfect Day For Bananafish written by J.D. Salinger a truth within humanity is shown. The story Totem takes place in a museum in Alberta and the totem poles are making sounds that are annoying to the people in the museum so they displace the totem poles. This is indirectly symbolizing the native communities of Canada and how they are ignored and pushed away. On the other hand, the story A Perfect Day For Bananafish is about a man returning from the second world war, he is mentally unstable and does not receive the help …show more content…
It is as simple as that, the concept that humans are selfish by nature and can not care about anything unless it is self serving was first proposed by philosopher Thomas Hobbes in the early 17th century and still proves truthful today including within the two novels examined. “Aimed the pistol, and fired a bullet through his right temple”(Salinger 7). Instead of dealing with his problems the hard way Seymour decided to take the coward's way out, which is debatably the easiest selfish thing to do. He has no regard for his wife as he kills himself right beside her. When she awakes to the gunshot she will be traumatized by her husband dead beside her and that is selfish. He gets to leave everything behind and the people he is closest too are left with nothing except the horrible nothingness of his body. “Well, you can’t hear it much from the basement”(King 3). Moving the totem poles creates a false clarity for the men in the story as they have the out of sight out of out of mind mentality. They do not want to be able to see the totem poles just like the native populations so they are put in the basement or reserves because it is easier to ignore the problem when you cannot directly see it but the problems still exist. The men believe that if they cannot see the problem than it is not their problem and no longer exists but what they are actually doing is making the problem much worse by being selfish. These two stories have very different examples yet are so …show more content…
Rogers). This quote fits perfectly and speaks truth, it is easier for people to not talk about issues than confront them. “other people were annoyed, too, but were too polite to complain about the noises”(King 1).
Human nature has been debated since the beginning of time was what is indisputable is that by nature people always choose the easy choice when it is an option. Always looking for shortcuts and easy way outs is human nature. The fact that people ignore issues, not confronting issues and self serving support this idea. In conclusion choosing the easy option may not always be the best option and some decisions require more thought and may be very difficult to
