A Passion For Accountability

My undying passion for Accountability in Public service and dream of a better society from my early years has an immeasurable influence in my personality. I grew up in a society where ills are accepted and regarded as a norm because there are few advocates on the subject. Through the YJAW’s blog, I am informed of publications with a reach of more than 120 countries and the platform supports individuals in building and applying their writing skills as scholars, practitioners, and agents of positive social change. Enabling positive social change is an integral aspect to achieving my dream of a better society.

Small Groups, Big Impact Have you ever felt like the odds were against you? Like there were no hopes in fixing a global issue because you were only one person? From the essay “How to Melt the Arctic,” written by John Bocknek, he says, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” The author enforces that no matter the problem, a person or a group of people can change a global issue. In today’s society, people underestimate the impact that they have if they work by themselves or even in an organization.…

Create Change Esther Dyson once said, “Change Means That What Was Before Wasn’t Perfect People Want Things To Be Better”. Even if one person creates changes in his or her society at a global, national, or community level in a positive way, will make this world a better place. Each individual can create changes in his or her society, unless he/she feels that it is important to society, that an action must be needed and the action that they going to propose in order for changes to happen. The changes that I want it to happen are; to have free schooling for students from kindergarten to twelve grade all over the world, along with women’s right to an education, offer free health care and helping homeless…

Thoreau and Civil Disobedience I, myself, like many citizens have a cynical view of the government. I am skeptical of their morals and often question if their decisions are an act of self-interest. Additionally, the average citizen is often also dissatisfied by the response of the government. Nevertheless, citizens want the government to serve their needs by being active and responsive; however, how can it do that if it can’t accurately assess what the public wants. The government cannot serve its citizens if they don’t speak up.…

All human beings have a purpose in this life; some discover it while they are young, whereas others find it during later in their life. Xiuhtezcatl Martínez, the author of the environmental movement guide, called We Rise, found his purpose at an earlier age. From six years of age, the author expresses that he saw that adults had damaged the world in which he was living, and thanks to this he found his desire, his voice and motivation to want to make a difference. He found his purpose when he "saw the despair in the planet I love" (citation). Martínez uses his personal history, through pathos and ethos, to spread awareness of human actions towards the planet and to provoke and stimulate in them the desire to make a difference.…

Two realities of human society always threaten to depress and confound us: many of us face daily violence and prejudice from those around us, and the collective conscious is slow to adopt positive change, i.e., we can hope that tomorrow we will stop fighting amongst ourselves and recognize the common humanity shared by all of us, but such an accomplishment is a far away goal with no end in sight. What then can we do? We must be the best citizens possible. Only then can real, albeit slow, progress can be made, and has been made.…

Social workers are often the "first responders" to social problems, which gives them a unique advantage when accessing local media and the press. This intimate knowledge of how clients are impacted by social issues allows the direct-service social worker to craft effective policy agendas, Jansson (2018). Social workers are the front line when it comes to the community social problems. If I may refer to Laura Chick, she was a model example of how social workers can be elected to serve in public office.…

Working with seniors in the case of abuse is challenging and demanding, and social workers need to use an anti-oppressive approach in order to address the issue and meet seniors’ needs. Additionally, social workers need to have a deep knowledge about risk factors, symptoms of neglect and elder abuse, in order to address the consequences and prevent them from reoccurrence (Donovan & Regehr, 2010). Elder abuse is a result of oppression based on age, which means that structural anti-oppression intervention surrounding aging is required in order to “confront and change social institutions, policies, laws, and economic and political systems that operate in a way that benefit the dominant group at the expense of subordinate groups” (Mullaly, 2007,…

Mark Twain once said “the two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why” (Twain, ND). I found out why when I was 19, pregnant and homeless living on the streets of New York City. I knew I had a purposed and that there had to be something more to life than the cards I was given. I believe change starts with one and that is why I decided that it will be my life’s mission to help end homelessness and be a service to other people.…

Brian’s lecture was really interesting, and got me thinking about the kinds of social justice that I am passionate about. I am really not one for participating in rallies or anything like that, so I figured I was not right for social justice, but after reading in On Being a Therapist I realized social justice can be really varied. He talks about how he has a foundation for helping girls in Nepal to stay in school, because many families who cannot afford school for all of their children sometimes sell their daughters to brothels (Kottler, 2010). I am passionate about women’s rights and it would be incredible to be able to be involved in some kind of social justice that works to advocate for women not just in America but all over the world. But again, this is where cultural competency and understanding addressing frameworks comes into play: equality and empowerment does not look the same to me as it does to women in India, Japan, or…

Poverty and Sexism To initiate effective change, it is imperative that social justice is implemented for the common good of all people. Individuals should be able to develop their full capacities, feel secure in society and have the right to an equal distribution of resources. Often times, individuals are challenged through social systems that oppress one through laws and social stigmas. It is essential that one does not stay neutral through these injustices and stand up against the oppressor. It is up to a community to engage and strive to end the oppression that silences and enables the oppressed.…
