A & P Theme

People desire power and acquire it in millions of ways throughout life. A&P is a great short story that show us the desire of power through the series of events in the reading. The theme is shown throughout the whole story by the actions of the girls and the manager. Sammy makes a really important character that helps the writes convey his theme. The short story is about three girls that enter an A&P and captures the attention of every male employee. Sammy watches their every step and is basically under control of the three girls who are in bathing suits. The manager sees the girls and humiliates them by telling them that they should be decently dress and that they have to follow the store policy. Sammy sees this happen and quits his job hoping the girls see him. As Sammy walks out of the A&P the girls are gone and he is left with no job or any girls.
The authors tone in the short story is a little humorous but also a little sad. At first Sammy is playing around and talking about the girls with Stokesie. They are both interested in the girls because they are in bathing suits in an A&P in the middle of the town which is kind of strange and funny. Sammy is captivated by the three girls but mostly Queeny. He is captivated by Queeny’s beauty and even thinks about her family being rich. When Nigel embarrass Queeny Sammy “Outraged that his manager, Lengel has made "that pretty girl blush" and wanting to demonstrate his refusal of such demeaning authority, Sammy quits his job on the spot”(salivary). This shows how Sammy was under control by the girls sexuality and cause him to quit his job. The act of quitting was to be able to impress the girls but they did not even notice what he has done and he is left with
