The short stories “A & P” by John Updike, “Burn Burning” by William Faulkner, and “How to Talk to Girls at Parties” by Neil Gaiman all have similarities and differences. Sarty doesn’t know whether he should turn his back on his father or turn his back on society and justice. Faulkner uses scenes like deSpain’s rug to emphasize how Sarty questions whether or not his father does things with bad intentions. The difference between Faulkner and Werner’s way of describing the scene comes to show how different the perspectives are. The book brings in more detail to emphasize the way Abner messed up the rug, opposed to the way Werner brought it to life and made it seem less intense (Werner, Barn Burning). This scene shows how differently the main conflict is brought up in comparison to diction and visual…

He is the only boy of three children, and because of this, he experienced special treatment from his father growing up. This became evident when his father allowed him to drink alcohol at a younger age than his sisters and allowed him to have more freedom with the car than his sisters once he got his license. He found throughout his childhood and teenaged years that more was expected of his sisters than him. Growing up, there were huge pressures on Lawrence to be masculine – he often recalls his father telling him to “man up.”…

Just as Deborah Tannen’s observation on gender in the classroom, I too, have noticed that males and females get along better in their own social circles. Although both genders bond better within their own circles, they differ in several ways; and in result, affecting the motives and behaviors of others around them. For example, males bond differently than females in the way that, males tend to bond with one another by making insults towards each other jokingly, whereas; females tend to bond with one another through gossip, and secret keeping; therefore males were obnoxious in play, whereas females seemed to be more conservative and secret. Another difference would be of those who that spoke up during class. For instance, males liked to take…

On Thursday three girls coming from the local beach, 5miles away walked in to the store with bikinis one and no shoes. Although Sarty’s loyalty may have been to defend his father, Sarty’s ambivalence towards Abner’s unjust actions and treatment of his family results in cutting his “family ties”, doing the right thing by warning De Spain about his barn, and leaving his family for good. Unfortunately, the story begins with Sarty going on trial to testify against his father, and lie that he didn’t burn down a barn.
