A & P By John Updike Analysis

A&P is a short story written by John Updike and published in 1961. The story represented the youthful rebellious spirits that govern the country during 1960. At that period a social battle developed between free will hippies and the most conservative side of society. Sammy’s character is a personification of the classic young man who decided to choose through the story the author reflects the increasing dissatisfaction of younger generations, who rebel against the rules of the society. Sammy represented here that young generation who choose to make changes in society, taking power and asserting their own actions and their voice. As a result, Sammy takes his power back, obtaining his own individualistic style. Sammy is the character that narrates the story, using a refined sarcastic language in his detailed description about the conflict in the grocery store. Consequently, we can be delighted with the great observational ability that Sammy possesses, bringing more flavor to his narrative through his powerful sensitivity. Besides her natural beauty, she also displays a great deal of confidence and her social class distinguished her as over the other two girls. Because of that Sammy thought that she was the leader.
