Human factors involve collaboration between people, machines, and their work environments. The ICU, perhaps more than any other unit of the hospital, generates a lot of data. Between monitoring equipment, electronic health records, communications, and research, there are many systems being used. The candidate, with her background in intensive care, understands the nature of the work of critical care providers. Her experience involving their environment; cognitive abilities; and the tasks which need to be performed will provide value in better integrating IT into the unit. Three areas the CNE would focus on are ergonomics, usability, and reliability.
Ergonomics
Ergonomics focuses on the design and ease of usability for computer systems. Factors such as safety, comfort and convenience are considered. For example, where is the computer placed so that it optimizes the nurses’ workflow? Is the number of computers available adequate? Are there computers in every room or do the nurses use wireless mobile carts? Critical care environments rely heavily on the teamwork between physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and lab technicians. There is a need, therefore, for the use of interdisciplinary documentation mechanisms.
