A Night in the Back Yard by GAF (Great Aunt Fluff) 5/28/2014

I have this great big house! There are four bedrooms and three bathrooms. The wooden floors are so shiny. They even glow like a delicate light in the dark. The house is quite pretty, I must say so myself. I work very hard to keep it up. It’s very colorful and cozy inside and out. There is a patio on the roof and a swimming pool in the back yard. I had my pool cleaned last week. Swimming is my favorite thing to do in the summer. Jas really liked to climb the ladder to get on the swing and hang up-side-down and then pretend she was blasting into outer space!

She really wasn’t sleepy at all. GAF knew this was going to be a long night, but she had promised Jas this night out for a long time.
Woo-WHOO! “What in the world is that GAF”, Jas questioned? GAF quickly told her that it was a night owl. “Why is it called a night owl,” Paige scarily asked? GAF explained to the girls that a night owl is a wise old restless bird who hoots and chirps and sits in a tree.
He does not come out during the day and stays awake all night long! Jas wanted to know why the wise old owl doesn’t sleep. GAF responded, “Well Jas, The majority of owl species are nocturnal, meaning they sleep during the day and are awake and hunt at night. However, this does not hold true for all owls, as some do hunt and consume their prey during daylight hours. Snowy owls, for example, hunt during the day, as they tend to live in climates with long hours of sunlight, and Barred owls will hunt during overcast weather, as well as at dawn and dusk.”
Now they settled down again. GAF’s eyes were rolling all about like small lighted marbles on the ground. She was listening to every little outside night sound! The flickering lantern seemed to be dying out at

Dawn broke to an explosion of bird songs, the cacophony starting Booker awake with a disgruntled groan. Unimpressed by the early morning alarm clock, he angrily pulled his pillow over his head and attempted to drown out the noise. However, the humorous fact that the sound easily penetrated through the downy feathers brought a good-natured smile to his lips, and with a resigned sigh, he threw the pillow onto the floor and sat up. From across the room, Tom yawned loudly, a sleepy smile spreading across his face.…

Its soft hooting was like a song, and as it grew rhythmic it calmed the moonlit hills and lulled us to sleep. Its song seemed to say that it had come to watch over us,”(Anaya 13). He also explains “Her sharp claws found flesh because the evil laughter of the coyotes changed to cries of pain,’’(Anaya 99) and “But the owl sought only one man, and it found him. It hurled itself on Tenario, and the sharp talons gouged out one eye from the face of the evil man,”(Anaya 134).…

In this essay, Staples discusses what it is like to be a black male in Chicago, and what he has to do to make people feel less threatened around him. One night during college, he was walking on streets at dark when he came upon a woman in her twenties. They were in Hyde Park and as she had seen him, she picked up her pace and scurried down the streets with a fearful look on her face. That was the first time something like that had happen to him. He made it clear that the woman obviously thought he was a rapist or a muggar.…

Capture and Handling Sieders (2009) suggests that all capturing or handling be done early in the morning to avoid the warmer temperatures of the day. While nets may be used to catch these owls, inexperienced handlers may damage the feathers or wings of the individual. To avoid these injuries, a thick towel is suggested whenever catching or handling a barn owl. (Sieders, 2009). Two or more people should guide the desired individual into a corner and down to the ground when possible.…

In The Deportation of Wopper Barraza by Maceo Montoya, the author tells a story about Wopper Barraza, who is suddenly forced to live in a culture where he has no prior experience. In Make Your Home Among Strangers by Jennine Capó Crucet, the author describes how the main character, Lizet, enters a strange new setting, and goes through self growth, as a result of the waning absence of her family. The two stories coincide due to their common theme of leaving home and trying to make it without their dysfunctional families, while paving the way towards self discoverment. Both characters go through the process of self discovery in different ways as well as producing different outcomes, but the message is still clear. Home does not have to be where your family is, it is the place where people feel they belong.…

In the documentary Off the Verandah we follow Bronislaw Malinowski and his contributions and innovations to anthropology. When watching the movie I learned more about how innovative Malinowski was to anthropology and also how other cultures such as Trobriand people can value some objects that other cultures would find useless or plentiful. For instance, anthropologists before Malinowski would only reshuffle and reanalyze information that was already discovered. He practically created the methods that are still used today in modern anthropology, such as living with the culture you are trying to study, which was later named participant observation.…
