In order to escape from slavery one must first understand the system of it. However, one can know the system like the back of their hand but unless action is taken against it, understanding the system of slavery becomes irrelevant. Different forms of resistance is, staying true to who you are, setting awareness to others as to how to escape and to let no one else define their character for them. The focus of slavery resistance is far more important than the system of slavery, because when one is enslaved resistance becomes your freedom. These forms of resistance are shown by Orion in Damballah, John in Member Youse a Nigger, and Malcom X in The Ballot or the Bullet. Staying true to oneself is a form of resistance because it shows that one can be uprooted from their home but one’s traditions, values, and beliefs cannot be uprooted from them. A prime example of this is shown in the reading of Damballah, the character Orion was taken into slavery. However, he was rebellious when it came to polluting his mind and soul with another religion known as, Christianity. Christianity was a religion forced upon the slaves in order to weaken them and make them believe their original religion is evil and no good. “Damballah was the word. Said it to Aunt Lissy and she went upside his head, harder than she ever slapped him” (Wideman 1141).
