THE STAGES OF GROUP DEVELOPMENT: A COMPREHENSION
Henry Ford once said “Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, working together is success’. This quote is not an understatement and does not seek to downplay the importance of a team in implementing changes and achieving organizational success. Rather, it is a statement which emphasizes how a group can do much more if members work and stand united together. An understanding of group evolution and development is fundamental to group effectivity and productivity. Hence, how do we go about the process of group development? At this stage group interaction is more enjoyable, easier and productive with open communication, bonding, mutual respect at the core of personal relationships. During this stage, the group has attained a consensus of norms and dynamics that permits similarities and uniqueness of the characters of each member. Group members begin to acknowledge each member’s contribution in the maintenance of norms, community building and conflict resolution. Interdependence and cohesion cultivate the conditions principal to this working stage. If ever members of a group reach this particular stage, the depth, scope and magnitude of personal relationships and interactions expand to an active and spirited interdependence. In this stage, people work independently, as a subgroup or as a whole unit with equal facility. The group, at this stage, has attained unity, high morale, group identity, group maturity and a high level of productivity. Members have found their roles within the group and are usually self-assuring, highly task oriented and people
