Personal Narrative: My Summer Break

Improved Essays
I received an email on my phone notifying me stating that I owe Shippensburg University an amount of four hundred dollars for tuition. Furthermore, I need another three hundred for books, plus another two hundred to place a deposit for a dorm next semester. As I was telling her this expensive statement, she turns around and says, “I’ll take care of it.” This was the one of the few experiences that I went through with my mother during this previous winter break. In summary, I experienced her supporting my decisions, motivating me to do better, and teaching me a life lesson. By noticing how much my mother does for me, I realized that someone believes in me.

The beginning of my winter break was sleeping, eating, and thinking about the upcoming

As the end of winter break approaches, I still don’t have all my money for next semester. My mom tells me she is working on it. I learned a valuable lesson that day. The lesson is that everyone is not meant to stay in life; sometimes it’s best if you let them go. I over heard my mom speaking to my father, she was asking him for money so it helps with my college expenses, but I could see the frustration on her face. My father wasn’t really the type to contribute to anything, but he was there all my life. So after a phone call full of excuses, my mom knew that she wasn’t getting any help with this bill. So I took upon myself to call my father, tell him exactly how I felt for a long time. I told him about himself and how he never did anything for me, so the least he can do is pay for some college fees. After that conversation, I was able to get two hundred dollars from my father, but I still don’t understand why it was such a hassle. I guess that’s just how some people act. My mom said, “Everyone is not meant to be in your life, and so you might have to let them go”. After that day, I decided to let him go out of my life, it might be painful; but I just don’t need that type of negativity in my life. I might have to apply this to others that I meet in life also. Through all of these experiences, I began to see the bigger picture about my …show more content…
I couldn’t see this as a child because she was the one to speak with her belt and ask questions later. However, through all of her tough love, I learned that she was shaping me into becoming a man. From the first experience, I honestly believe my mom will support anything I do, and this is because she wants me to make my own decisions. The decisions might be good or bad, little or small, she wants me to become comfortable with making life changes. There will come a day when she won’t be there to do it for me. I’m beginning to become an adult, and her giving me more freedom to make my own choices is just the first step into adulthood. As for the second experience, my mom was always motivating me to do better, but it was different this time, which made it special. Her motivating to do better in school wasn’t just for me, but it was for her too. I have high expectations for myself and I have to get through school to achieve them. I want to be successful to put a smile on her face, and she won’t give up on me until I achieve this mission. This is the reason why I take education so seriously. The last experience showed me that my mom wants me to grow up and start seeing the world as it is. Also in this world, everyone is not really meant to stay in your life and they have to be removed. My mom wanted me to see this especially with my father, because sometimes it just has to happen in order to live a

Without a doubt in my mind, Mindset by Carol S. Dweck not only reinforces the way I handle situations, but it has also has shed some new light on how I approach things as well. I have gained a much greater understanding for explaining why I felt the way I did in the past, and a better explanation to my current mindset moving forward as well. Reading this book has allowed me to better understand myself and I am very grateful for this opportunity. Personally, from this book, I view the fixed mindset as a person viewing everything about them as being stagnant. Examples are basic qualities: limited intelligence and talent.…

Last semester was definitely the hardest for me. I have two challenging research papers toward the end of the semester. I find it hard because I did not know what to write about and which assignments I should start on first. I manage to overcome this challenge by narrowing the topics and start on the paper that was closest to deadline. My stress level was at 10 because I skip meals and stayed up all night long to finish my papers.…

Who you are, what you know, and who you know can significantly can impact your education experience and how you interact with larger society. In Unequal Childhoods, Lareau explains how families social class and race lead to them having different parenting styles, which lead to the families having different interactions with other adults, siblings, educators, and medical officials. I agree with Lareau 's case about the parenting styles have an impact on how families and children interact with larger society. Lareau 's argument on how parenting and childhood vary by social class is strong because she explores many different families from different social classes and races. Lareau observed from two elementary schools and interviewed with 88…

Unlike many of my peers, my life story is slightly different. Many of my peers share the story of living in a single parent home, being homeless, violence, and poverty. However, in my case, living in a two parent household is strange to hear about to my peers. For me, living in a two parent household means more work because of my desire to receive a full scholarship. Upon my research, I noticed that many of my older peers would receive better college financial opportunities because of their life experiences.…

I was smiling the whole time as the skin around my neck was being ripped off. Well I wasn’t actually smiling and as brutal as I made it sound, it wasn’t as horrific an event now that I look back on it. The incident occurred while I was on Spring Break during my freshman year in high school. My family and I were vacationing in Gatlinburg, Tennessee;which if I might add we’ve been there about eight times since I was seven years old. I remember clearly that day down to the exact temperature.…

Personal Essay First Draft When I was 8 years old I realized my brother Benny and I were twins. I realized this the first year we went to summer camp. There was not necessarily one singular moment when I discovered we were twins, it was over the three week period that this epiphany came to me. For the first few days no one could tell us apart. In our activities, meals, and sometimes in our cabins other people could not tell us apart.…
