Public opinion should be honest and unsettling as discussion occurs from people being forced into conversation; voicing a contentious opinion will not be accepted by everyone and nor can predict how individuals will react to the statements. The aftermath of a controversial comic released by Charlie Hebdo mocked ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was released to the public through the magazine. The magazine company was attacked by two gunmen in France, Paris on January 7th, 2015 leading to twelve casualties with five being civilians. After the attack, the question of who was to blame for the attack was created. The cartoonists were aware of the risk they were taking by producing satirical cartoons throughout their years. To be killed by people who do not agree with them does not justify the action of violence. If there is a limitation to people’s opinions, people will end up living in fear of speaking up about unspoken subjects. Censorship expression controversial subjects just to appease a threatening force defies democratic expression of idea and opinions. Even with the risk of death, cartoonists cannot stop showing their pieces or producing them just out of fear. Once something is posted online, a picture, video, instant message, etc., it can never “go away” as the a person gives up the ability of control of the post. Everyday teenagers use the popular website, Twitter, to post a photo or video, like posts, share posts, blogs, and include website links. The messages in posts can be positive or neutral depending on the user’s choice. A democratic value consist of people’s ability to freely express their opinions on whatever they chose, their excitement for the latest fashion trends all the way to bring awareness to world issues. The hashtag “#bringourgirlsback” spread like wildfire over night on Twitter, bringing the world’s attention to 200 Nigerian schoolgirls kidnapped by the Nigerian government. People from every continent posted photos with them carrying a sign with the slogan, politicians expressing their prayers for the families affected by the event, and a union of the world advocating for the government to release the girls safely. The choice of users to continue talking about the subject created a positive change and a higher percentage of the girl’s being set free from the pressure on the government.
