An Unpleasant Vienna
During the end of the nineteenth century, also known as the “Fin De Siecle” the people of the city of Vienna, Austria struggled greatly. RJ Longstreet
Nothing was going right for the people of Vienna causing many to experience emotional distress. During this time period, there was a great cultural change. This shift varied from the music that was being composed to the new steps in architectural beauty throughout the city. Because of this culture shock, the citizens developed disorders such as anxiety and depression. The rise in people being affected by these mental health illnesses caused suicide rates to skyrocket. Prince Rudolph was raised a privileged prince and throughout his life, remained that way. He was catered to hand and foot by everyone that was in his life. One of the events retold in the book, that was unfortunately more common during this time period, were the affairs that Prince Rudolph would take part in with other woman because he was unsatisfied with his marriage. A key quality that Rudolph had was his liberal views. Rudolph wanted to help the struggling people of Austria because he saw how the anxiety of the people within the city of Vienna was mounting and they were losing their lives because of it. He longed for transformation to save his city that he so deeply admired, but he had no power to make a change without the help from his father. Prince Rudolph needed the approval from his father to be able to make the changes necessary for his country(A Nervous Splendor). His father was completely against the liberal views that his son had since a young age. He was so against his views that he would not even let his son go and speak to the people about his ideas that could change their struggling county. The ideas that the prince possessed ultimately were never shared, could have ended up being something that could have pulled the city and its entire population out of the slump that they were in. A good example of the same type of issue that was occurring in Vienna but in another part of the world is “The Pan Movements.” The overall concepts of the movements relates directly to the dream that Prince Rudolph had of wanting to make a change and help the people and city of Vienna move forward. Many countries during this time wanted to expand their territories in a hope that the new land would bring a better life for their people. The countries that were involved in these movements were China, India, Germany, Turkey and many others
