Diane Ackerman, born on October 7, 1948, in Waukegan, Illinois, is an American poet and writer who is known for her interest and examinations of the natures of the world. Ackerman now lives in New York and is married to Paul West, who is also a writer. She attended both Cornell University and Pennsylvania University. Throughout her career, she’s earned a few awards and honors, and is considered to be a bestseller. Her New York Times bestseller books include; The Human Age (2014), The Zookeeper’s Wife (2008), and A Natural History of the Senses (1990). A Natural History of the Senses, starts off with the sense of smell. Every chapter of the book obtains a different sense (smell, touch, taste, hearing, vision). Different types of smell have the ability to take me back to my childhood days. Years pass us by and our old memories become foggy. Yet, the sense of smell has the power to take us back and make those memories clearer. I remember my first real Christmas tree, before hand my mother would always use an artificial tree, because she figured it would save us money in the long run. To make the tree feel more real, she would buy pine Febreze, and candles. However, one year she came to the decision to buy a real Christmas tree. I remember being so happy and excited, because I had never experienced a real Christmas tree before. Immediately, once the tree was up in the house, the smell of natural pine spread throughout the entire house. The smell of pine was so rich and pure. From that moment on, I knew what real fresh pine smelled liked, and this smell did not compare to the sprays and candles my mother would buy.
