William C. Rhoden in “Seeing Through the Illusions of the Sports Hero” explores the concept of sports heroism and the characteristic elements that describe it — “emotion … propaganda … hypocrisy … [and] tragedy.” I find it interesting that sports athletes are revered for their perfection and simultaneously, condemned for mistakes. I feel as though we are back in the times of Ancient Egypt, where the Pharaohs are considered divine Kings for as long as the Nile and the land surrounding it prospers. Should a calamity persist (i.e. drought), the Pharaoh is overtaken and replaced. Similarly, in the context of sports heroes, it is as if humanity has forgotten that to be human is to make mistakes.…
To Play or Not To Play???“Put Me in Coach” When people reminisce about their high school years, fond memories of being at the height of fitness, spending countless hours with teammates, and playing in the “Big Game” are often treasured. However, some students at St. Anthony High School are choosing not to be involved in the athletic program for social and academic reasons. As a result, many are missing out on one of the most important aspects of their high school career. Although some believe that participation in high school athletics is a roadblock towards academic success and a satisfying social life, students should play at least one sport throughout high school because they will develop critical life skills and increase their physical…
Everyone I knew was good at one thing or another. but I, at seventeen years old, had never even learned how to ride a bike. I was never considered by anyone as the “athletic type,” but as I compared myself to classmates, I realized that I should probably try out for a few sports. Things did not go well.…
More or less a lot of this actually happened. I was just a regular yinzer, waiting for the Buc’s to finally advance past the first or second round of the playoffs. I felt like this was our year, it was a warm and beautiful september. The Pirates had recorded the second best record in all of baseball. The top three records in all of baseball all occurred in the Pirates division: the NL Central.…
At first, It was my team and I just sitting in our little locker room. We were banging on the lockers as hard our hands could handle. Then the music started playing. “BOOM! HERE COMES THE BOOM, I DON’T REALLY WANT IT NOW.”…
It was a crisp night in Febuary 2 years ago. The moon beamed down on us. I felt the brisk breeze across my ears and face. My nose was running like a waterfall. We all looked like ripe tomatoes.…
What I was looking forward to doing my senior year, was leading my team as a senior to the best we could be. I was working harder than I ever had all winter long leading up to this. I had one goal that I did not see happen any of my four years there, which was getting to the state championship. There were a lot of things that had to go right for this to happen. The team had to be good, they had to work hard every day, they had to win districts, they had to win regional’s, and the most importantly the team had to get along great they have to be a family.…
Growing up I never liked playing sports with all of the other kids in my grade. It was always fun but, I never like the fact that the coaches made you look stupid if you made one small mistake. Even though I didn’t like the coaches, I still tried every sport that was offered to me. I played baseball, basketball and football growing up.…
Last year during the baseball season, I was running into a plethora of problems such as not making contact and not getting hits. This made me feel hopeless and listless, as I had played baseball for years, and playing the sport was one of my favorite hobbies. Feeling unable to do anything about my predicament, my coach said that my teammates and I could come to the cages whenever we wanted to. I realized that this opportunity was the solution to my problem. I went to my team’s batting cages every day that my busy schedule would allow.…
My Story “You wouldn’t believe you if I said it, but I’m looking in the mirror smiling at myself right now”. This was the remark I received from the head coach of Miami baseball when I committed to play baseball at Miami University. It was not an easy road for me to get to become a Division 1 athlete here at Miami. I have always dreamed of playing college baseball and hopefully professional baseball, but my story to get me this far is one that is quite complicated.…
The game ended with one swing of the bat. We had just won a regional title. None of us knew what this meant for us but who cared, we were winners. After basking in our glory for all of 10 minutes, we were told to pack a bag because in the morning we left for Yountville, a small city in Northern California where many retired vets stayed. It was here that we would would play for the state championship over the next three days, as well as be our first stepping stone to an undefeated trip through state, Super Regionals, and finally placing 4th in the Nation.…
In my mind I felt like Usain Bolt, but something deep down like me I looked more like a deer running into headlights. I was so close to first base could taste it. Next thing I knew, I had passed the base and was headed straight for the bleachers. One second my feet were on the ground, then I was doing a flip into the bleachers and it all goes black.…
Soccer has always been my love, my passion, and my outlet. If I have a rough day, all I have to do is lace up my cleats and step onto the field and just like that, all my worries drift away. I would always play for myself and no one else, it was my game and I thought that no one could take that away from me. Every time I played soccer I felt free, until the day that everything changed.…
Needs Analysis: Soccer Soccer is a demanding sport. Players must be well conditioned, strong, and flexible. The legs are the obvious muscle that must be toned, but few people realize that the core, arms, neck, and back must have a strong muscular background as well. These muscles work together to contribute to the success of a soccer player. Injuries to the muscles happen often, but this risk of injury can be minimized with flexibility training.…
