A Narrative Essay On How Alcoholism Changed My Life

Decent Essays
When I finally left the army it was in the year 2000 and my alcoholism had begun to escalate. By now I was drinking in the morning just to face the day. My life was one hundred percent dominated by alcohol. I had to drink all the time. My faithless friends had started avoiding me, but occasionally one or two of my old friends would stop by to see how I’m doing and suggest I try to do something about my drinking, mostly because they all could see I was very ill. So I had decided to drink less, but it had not work out great. So I tried to stop altogether, but was amazed at how difficult it was to stop completely. I had become desperate to do something about my drinking, I got the shakes and sweats if I couldn't get my drink, but I hated it.

Other than being anxious and not feeling so well physically, nobody in the outside world could even tell I had a problem.…

Early in the inception of AA, both Dr. Bob and Bill made it clear that no one can know the true nature of alcoholism as well as another suffering alcoholic (Big Book, 2001). The inherent capacity for depth of empathy, evident in sharing one 's experience, strength and hope, with another person who is suffering from the same problems, is a strong foundation for the much needed support necessary for recovery to take place. For this project, I attended two different meetings. One was an open meeting of alcoholics anonymous and the other was a closed meeting of crystal meth…

There are many things I remember from my long 17 years of being alive, playing football, shooting guns, passing time with loved ones, my first girlfriend, but on thing that will always stand above the crowd is the smell of beer. Not the sweet smell of Bourbon, or the harsh smell of Whiskey, or the savory smell of Wine, but the rotten smell of cheap beer. It was a smell that followed me everywhere in the early years of my adolescence, so much so that I began to believe that it was the social norm. I have few friends who I know are true to me, they have been by my side for years and I know they won’t be leaving anytime soon.…
