A Narrative Essay On How A Black Belt Changed My Life

I started training when I was about nine years old. I was in gymnastics but I was too old to stay in the class I was in but we couldn't afford the price to get into the class for older kids. My dad wanted me to join kung fu so I could learn to defend myself. Like every parent, he wanted me to be safe in this terrifying world. I thought it sounded pretty cool so we talked my mom into looking into a karate school. We looked through the phone book and the first place we found was Belen Goju Ryu karate. We decided to call to see what the price was to join. We were told to try out the free week and I was so excited I ran around “karate chopping” everything. At the time, I had no idea this decision would have such an impact on my life. I went for the free week and I loved it. Sadly, I couldn’t join for awhile do to money issues. About a month later, I went back to karate. My dream at ten years old was to be “the youngest black belt ever.” As I grew up, I began to realize my dream was irrational. However, at the time of my yellow belt, I was determined that I would become a black belt. Maybe not the youngest, but I wouldn't quit until I got a black belt. At that moment I made a promise to myself that one day I would be on the black belt wall. Although there have been many times where I've doubted my …show more content…
She’s strong and motivated and she pushes herself farther than any woman I’ve ever met. She has the self-discipline to take care of herself by watching what she eats and she does hundreds of pushups a day. She is stronger than some men I know mentally and physically and I hope that someday I can train myself to be like her. Sensei Richard inspired me to never give up on anything I do. He made me believe that I could do anything with motivation and enough practice. He taught me that the only thing stopping me from doing what I want to do is myself and the only one who could make me better is

I was a reluctant student, being dragged to a martial arts class in a noisy gym for one hour twice a week. It has been nearly nine years since then, and Tae Kwon Do has helped me to overcome my shyness, my fears, my anxieties, and my stresses, and helped me grow into a stronger, more confident, and overall better person. This has all been thanks to Master Valdez. He taught Tae Kwon Do long before I entered the dojang, and has continued teaching it through the three location changes, the surges and droughts of new students, every single test, and a brief period of hospitalization.…

I started wrestling for the Smithville Youth Wrestling Club. At the time I was in the fifth grade and I was 12 years old. At first I hated the idea of wrestling because of the tight singlet you had to wear, and also the idea of people making fun of you because of “rolling around with other guys”. Plus to make thing worse a lot of the other kids there have already wrestled since they were 5 which gave them more experience. I remember coming home from practice and just hating wrestling because it was hard work…

Why I Began Martial Arts During my childhood, my family and I were super obsessed with karate and kung - fu movies. Mostly movies like karate kid were our motivation to start taekwondo. Growing up most kids participate in basketball, football, and baseball. But growing up with a father who was a wrestler, I chose to wrestle. My dad got me started in wrestling when I was about three years old; I instantly loved it. I fell in love with the sport and by the time I was in high school, wrestling was about the only sport I participated in. My freshman and sophomore years were a bit rough, as I wasn’t big enough to field the lightest weight class.…

The time I quit the wrestling team was a really crazy moment in my life. It all came down to what I wanted to do for that year in particular, when I quit I had thoughts about returning or coming back later but I knew nothing was permanent. After joining back it helped me in school a little bit but also set me back in some ways a lot as well. Coach Staggs was the main person who made me feel bad for quitting and also made me not want to do it. He was more on the aggressive side and did not want me to quit how I wanted to quit which was all at once.…

You can build tight connections with people of different ages. Lots of people who are at my Tae Kwon-Do club also go to school and its interesting to think that these people you talk to both at school and in the dojang wouldn’t be apart of your life if you had never taken your first Tae Kwon-Do lesson and fallen in love the sport. Another aspect of Tae Kwon-Do I really love is competitions; I have now done four and becoming a black belt will just open more doors for me in so many aspects of my…

The flips I’d pore over with curiosity were now my reality, and years of breaking boards and practicing forms became years of indulging my own imagination. The patience my teachers had while teaching never failed to inspire me, and now that I’m a black belt, I get the opportunity to teach new students with the same patience and precision. I aspire to master the Jedi’s calm and focus under pressure, and taekwondo helps me focus, release energy, and provides me with new challenges. It taught me physical and mental discipline, and introduced me to a group of comrades that I consider my family, so I don’t have to Bihan solo…

He has even taught me how to use my hands to build rebuild engines, uses power tools, old tools, just how to become a handy man and how to do things without having to pay someone to do it for you. He has proven to me that life does not have to be based off on how much money that you or make but off of what you love doing; or just what makes you happy. During class, I would find myself intently staring at the clock, and wanting to finish up our lesson as quick as possible. This made it difficult to learn routines, and I feared that I would fall behind. Not to mention my brother’s continual bad behavior, which would result in him fleeing the dojo every couple of classes. This is when me and my parents realized that I had a choice. I either needed to drop soccer and baseball, or quit karate.…
