Decent Essays
Gio, Trentin, and I entered this mysterious neighborhood looking to explore a little and then something life threatening happened. First, I learned to always look both ways for incoming cars. Now every time I am about to cross the road, I always look both ways. This incident that I’m about to tell you scared me, so I’ll always look for cars to make sure this doesn’t happen again. Ponyboy was really the first person I could express my opinions to and the first person I could really talk to about how I feel about this stupid social division we have to go by. Even though he doesn’t really understand how we Socs have problems too, I can see that he at least sort of understands- not completely, but just a little… Knowing that he sort of understands is a mixed feeling of relief and just a bit of an absurd feeling as well, I mean, a Soc and a greaser actually having a nice conversation.. I didn’t expect him to actually understand at all, but I also didn’t expect him to be completely ignorant about it either. “Cherry, look what’s coming,” Marcia quickly addressed. I watched the blue Mustang as it was coming down the street.…

Staples never faced his ultimate goal of reality until being awarded a scholarship to attend the University of Chicago. When his dreams of budding out of the rancorous cycle of poverty he was born into were becoming a reality, Staples then had to take on a few other hurdles that would now, presently, be considered racial profiling.…

The Holocaust, it was a huge event in national history, and it affected thousands of people. In June of 1942, with the dreaded situation for the Jews, the Franks decided to go into hiding in secret in their office building. Along with a few others, Miep Gies agreed to be a "helper," to them, by bringing them food that she would collect from different food sources, with illegal ration cards her husband had procured as part of the Dutch resistance. Miep and her colleagues also made sure that the building was in a low-profile, so that suspicion was not brought amongst them. At their suggestion, Miep and a woman named Jan even spent a night with the eight people in hiding upstairs, where she said, "The fright...was so thick I could feel it pressing down on me."…

The section I found most interesting was Esquino’s Narrative because it was actual events that occurred in his life. I felt as a reader I connected more to Esquino’s story in an emotional level from the start of the narrative making it more compelling. I can’t imagine going through the situations Esquino had to endure as a slave throughout his life in order to survive. This text mentions some of the struggles he went through while at times he just wanted to throw his hands up in the air and just give up on life, “…on my refusing to eat, one of them held me fast by the hands, and laid me across I think the windlass, and tied my feet, while the other flogged me severely” (Volume E, 93). Flogging someone because they refused to eat seems an extreme…

An Accident Waiting to Happen In life, an innocent bystander, parent, or friend could receive news that would change their life forever. A death of a loved one is something that can drop someone to their knees in agony. Karl Shapiro’s “Auto Wreck” faces the hard truth that is a car accident. To summarize, “Auto Wreck” is a gut-wrenching retelling of a brutal accident in which two cars collide in a fatal accident. The poem concludes on a more philosophical note explaining the certainty that is faced in true death and how unseen and sudden a car accident can be on a family.…
