It cost $350 to take a mission trip to Knoxville, Tennessee. In order to earn this money, I sent letters to family members and friends, offering any sort of service to earn the money. I babysat and sang at different church events. Some of my close family just donated money because they love me, and they knew it went towards a good cause! I went on this trip on behalf of Park Chapel Christian Church in Greenfield, Indiana.
When I was a freshman, my parents and I went a bunch of meetings, since it was the first time I would go. My parents are very protective of me. Now, I have gone every year in high school, and I hope to go again this year. This year will be my last year, because I am a senior. Last year was one of my favorite years. I met a lot of new people, and I helped those in need. I built two brand new roofs, cleaned up their yards, encouraged them to live positively, and worked with a group called Eagles’ Nest. One day, we had to build a new roof, and in that neighborhood I met “blank” and “blank”. They were beautiful, kind, and shy, at first. We gave them piggy-back rides, let them play with our hair, and ate lunch with them. You could tell they weren’t used to all the extra attention. Their smiles were huge laughter,

I attended an open meeting at the Holy Name Church Broadway on 96th Street. The meeting takes place every Friday evening at 7:30 PM and it runs for one hour. The leader of the group immediately self-identified and was very personable. He started the meeting by reading the 12-steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. He then welcomed the speaker of the night, a 40 something female who has been sober for the last 10 months originally from New Jersey.…

Divine Trust Trusting in a divinity isn’t as easy or straightforward as it sounds. I can most definitely attest to this. As a person raised in the Christian church I have not only have I lived this statement, but over the years I’ve seen it in the lives of various friends in my youth group. I continue to see this struggle to trust throughout the plot of “The Odyssey” by Homer. The protagonist Odysseus, his son Telemachus, and Odysseus’ ship’s crew all are prime examples.…

As soon as I walked into the meeting I saw the faces on each of the different families that attended that evening. Most of their expressions were blank, as if they had all their emotions taken out of them. I could understand why they felt that way, having to deal with a family member under the influence of drugs or alcohol can take a huge toll on the families lives, mentally and physically sometimes. It is a construction based mission trip where teens travel all across America to sleep in churches and schools with the sole purpose of serving others. I have been able help fix up houses by painting, fixing the siding, and repairing porches. Even though just painting a house is not solving any world problems it has been a small way to make a big difference in the homeowner’s life.…

For my community service project, I decided to do many things. I helped with the Second Harvest fundraiser at our school; volunteered to hand out metals and bags for the runners that finished the half marathon and 5k. I also was a runner for a speaking competition at Islands High School. Last school year we collected over 2000 pounds of canned food for Second Harvest. It feels good to help the people that don’t have all the things we have.…

It was the summer of 2007, and my parents thought that it would be a brilliant idea to go on a family road trip to some unknown location. This was the summer before I started high school and I wasn’t in the family bonding mood for a day let alone two weeks. With me being an only child, grandchild, and great grandchild, I was the only kid with five adults in a minivan. Why my parents thought that this was a good idea is still beyond my imagination.…

Throughout all of my school years, this was my first time speaking with a student who is in an EIL class at BYU-Hawaii. Even though I knew that our school has many EIL students and I have many friends who were in EIL as well, I was not interested in their EIL classes. I believe that it is because I did not take EIL classes when I came here for my first year. As a result, I did not know any students who are currently taking EIL 310 class, so I was unsure on how I should contact the student in this class. Fortunately, one of my Korean friends mentioned his brother and told me that he is taking this class right now.…

Some churches offer free meals or events for everyone to show the hospitality of Christians. It is important to welcome newcomers and care about them. However, though it is safe to stay inside of the church and have connections with the brothers and sisters in the church, Jesus command all of us to make disciples of all nation.
